ITHACA, N.Y. -- Jacob MacDonald '15 became the third player in Cornell history to lift the Stanley Cup when his Colorado Avalanche defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Sunday's game six. MacDonald joined six-time winner Ken Dryden and three-time champion Joe Nieuwendyk in hoisting the oldest existing trophy awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America.
Since graduating, MacDonald has played in the ECHL with the Elmira Jackals and Toledo Walleye, the AHL with the Springfield Falcons, Albany and Binghamton Devils, Springfield Thunderbirds and Colorado Eagles around NHL stints with the Florida Panthers in 2018-19 and the Avalanche in both 2020-21 and 2021-22. He played eight regular season games with Colorado this season and has two goals and eight assists in 43 regular season NHL games.
MacDonald was called up from Colorado of the AHL in early June to provide the Avalanche with some additional depth at the defenseman position.
The three-year starter for the Big Red accumulated four goals and 17 assists for 21 points in 104 career games. His +6 rating as a senior ranked second on the club.
