Kiingi, Carnevale Net First Collegiate Goals in Men’s Soccer's Win at Saint Joseph’s

PHILADELPHIA – Kisa Kiingi and Westin Carnevale scored their first collegiate goals 21 seconds apart in a convincing 2-0 victory for Cornell over Saint Joseph's in men's soccer action at Sweeney Field on Saturday afternoon.

Emeka Eneli assisted both Cornell goals in supporting Ryan Friedberg's second consecutive clean sheet for the Big Red (3-0-0).

Cornell dominated the contest, outshooting the Hawks by a 21-5 ledger and holding Saint Joseph's without a shot on target.

"I thought we showed great intensity on both sides of the ball, considering this was our third road game on the bounce," said John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer. "Our two goals came on the back of some consistent pressure to begin the second half and we did a professional job of closing the game off."

Neither team could find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of action despite Cornell outshooting Saint Joseph's 10-3.

Kiingi scored the first of Cornell's two goals in the 55th minute after receiving a pass from fellow defender Connor Drought from the left flank. While inside the 18-yard box, Kiingi knocked down the pass with his chest before blasting his left-footed shot from the penalty shot marker past Saint Joseph's goalkeeper, Luis Ludosan.

Just 21 seconds following Kiingi's marker, Cornell pounced on a Saint Joseph's turnover, setting up Carnevale's first collegiate goal. Eneli dribbled upfield before passing to Carnevale, whose shot hit the crossbar and crossed the goal line.

Game Notes

• Saturday's match was the sixth meeting between the Big Red and Hawks. Cornell has now won all six meetings, outscoring Saint Joseph's by a 12-4 margin.

• The Big Red opened the season with three victories for the first time since 2018 and the 12th overall time in the last 76 years of competition.

• Friedberg extended his shutout streak to 231:53 with his consecutive clean sheets.

• Cornell has conceded one goal over its first three games, matching the fewest given up by a Cornell team since 2014. Dating back to 1946, it is the 10th season in which Cornell has allowed one goal or fewer over its first three games of a season since 1946 (1953, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1993, 1996, 2012, 2014, 2022).

• With Kiingi scoring the game's first goal, Cornell improved to 32-7-4 under John Smith when netting the game's first tally. Defensively, the Big Red are 34-7-6 when conceding one goal or less in a game under Smith.

• Scoring multiple goals in a game has been a good omen for Cornell soccer under Smith, as the Big Red are now 34-3-2 when scoring at least twice in a match.

• Eneli logged his second two-assist game. The other instance came last year at High Point on Sept. 7.
