Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Syracuse Scores Twice in First Half to Defeat Women's Soccer

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A pair of first-half goals guided Syracuse to its sixth consecutive win – matching its program record – with a 3-0 victory over Cornell in women's soccer action at a rain-soaked SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Erin Flurey and Gianna Savella scored the Orange's first-half goals, while Chelsea Domond posted a three-point day after netting an insurance marker in the 72nd minute. Shea Vanderbosch improved to 6-0 with her two-save clean sheet for Syracuse (7-1-0).

Nicole Shulman made a career-high six saves in the setback for Cornell (1-4-1).

Offensively, Mia Gonzalez and Aidan Julia Reineman each logged two shot attempts apiece. Reineman and Emily St. John recorded the Big Red's two shots on goal.

"We're disappointed with the result, but we thought we did very well in the first half in terms of controlling the ball for long periods of time," Cornell head coach Rob Ferguson said. "We created some decent opportunities, had some really good efforts on goal, and were unlucky to see one come back off the post.

"The goal at the end of the first half made life very difficult and in the second half we wanted intensity and energy to press and chase the game. We feel like we did that pretty well. It made the game more open, but we didn't connect the final passes. Syracuse is a good team and they played well."

Syracuse outshot Cornell, 17-6, including by a 9-2 margin in shots on goal. The Orange also had five more corner kicks than the Big Red, 7-2.

Early in the contest, it appeared that Syracuse scored the game's first goal off a corner kick, but an Orange player was deemed offside after the first touch on the set piece.

In the 19th minute, Flurey drew a penalty as she was brought down inside the penalty area. Flurey sent her shot into the bottom left corner of the goal, giving Syracuse the lead.

Gonzalez had a chance to tie the game in the 38th minute with her 20-yard shot, but it hit the left post before a Syracuse defender cleared the ball out of the 18-yard box.

Savella scored with 29 seconds left in the first half, heading in a right-flank cross from Domond, giving the Orange a two-goal halftime lead.

Later in the second half, Domond used a ball move to gain separation from a Cornell defender, lofting her shot over a leaping Shulman to give the hosts an insurance marker.

Game Notes

• Sunday was the 13th all-time meeting between the Big Red and Orange. Syracuse improved to 10-0-3 all-time over its Central New York foe. Cornell has been held scoreless in its last three games against the Orange.

• The Big Red was held scoreless on Sunday, snapping its six-game scoring streak. It was the first time Cornell was shut out since Oct. 30, 2021 (1-0 loss to Princeton).

Reinna Gabriel made her first appearance of the season after missing the first five games after being at the Philippines National Team camp in California. Gabriel appeared in 28 minutes off the bench.
