Shulman's Late Saves Help Women's Soccer to Draw with Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – A pair of saves in the final eight minutes by senior goalkeeper Nicole Shulman helped Cornell to a 1-1 draw with Binghamton on Wednesday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Laken Gallman scored the only goal for Cornell (1-4-2), heading in a set piece by Aidan Julia Reineman.

Shulman made a total of five saves in the contest.

Maya Anand netted the goal for Binghamton, with Victoria McKnight earning the assist. Kaitlyn Williams made seven saves for the Bearcats (2-4-2).

"The draw feels tough on the balance of the game," Cornell head coach Rob Ferguson said. "We felt we dominated in the first half, particularly on both sides of the ball. We created good chances in both halves to score goals and we need to become more clinical."

Cornell peppered Williams with eight shot attempts in the first half, five of which were on goal. Tanum Nelson and Reineman logged two shots on goal apiece in the first 45 minutes. Mia Gonzalez added the other attempt.

In the 74th minute, Ashley Durik was taken down just shy of the 18-yard box in the left flank, setting up a Cornell free kick from a dangerous spot on the pitch. Gallman headed Reineman's set piece into the goal, giving the Big Red the lead.

Binghamton responded with a goal of their own 1:44 later, as the Bearcats took advantage of a Cornell booking. Victoria McKnight took the set piece from 20 yards out for Binghamton, which Shulman stopped. Maya Anand took advantage of the rebound, depositing the game-tying goal in the 76th minute.

McKnight had a chance to score the go-ahead goal for Binghamton in the 83rd minute, but Shulman made a finger-tip save to keep the match level.

With 41 seconds left, a Binghamton set piece was headed on goal and Shulman made a miraculous leaping save to keep the game tied.

"After they tied it up, both sides could have won it," Ferguson said. "Nicole stepped up in the final minutes to ensure we left Binghamton with the tie."
