Shulman, Fox Combine for Clean Sheet in Scoreless Draw Against St. John's

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Nicole Shulman and sophomore Erica Fox combined for Cornell's first clean sheet of the season as the Big Red women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with St. John's at Berman Field on Saturday afternoon.

Shulman and Fox each made one save over 45 minutes in goal for the Big Red (1-4-3).

In what turned out to be a fairly even contest, St. John's concluded the match with a one-shot advantage, 10-9, and had one more shot on goal, 3-2. The Red Storm also possessed the ball for 51 percent of the contest, compared to Cornell's 49 percent.

Gina Muzi logged a two-save clean sheet for the Red Storm (3-2-3).

"Very happy to have gotten a result having not played particularly well," Cornell head coach Rob Ferguson said. "That's an important thing. It's what good teams can do. We've played well in many games this year and not gotten the results we wanted. Today was the opposite. We did some good things, but on the balance of that, we don't feel like we played well. It's important when you don't pay well, you can find a way to get results."

Both teams had difficulty mustering offense as 60 percent of the contest was played over the middle third of the pitch.

Laken Gallman recorded the first of Cornell's two shots on goal in the first half during the game's 14th minute. Reineman registered the other shot on target in the 23rd minute.

Kayla Mesaros' shot on goal in the 21st minute was the lone shot on target for St. John's in the first half.

St. John's had chances to create opportunities in the second half but were offsides six times, five of which came in the final 15-plus minutes.

The Red Storm were offsides a total of eight times in the match.

Isabelle Aviza nearly put the Red Storm ahead in the 70th minute when her shot hit the left post before Cornell was able to clear the ball out of the 18-yard box.

Reineman had the Big Red's lone shot on target in the second half, with her shot being saved by Muzi in the 82nd minute.

Game Notes

• Saturday was the fourth all-time meeting between Cornell and St. John's. It was the second time the Big Red and Red Storm played to a draw, as the series continues to favor the Red Storm, 2-0-2. It was the first draw between the two programs since the inaugural meeting on Nov. 17, 2002, in the ECAC Tournament. St. John's ended up winning that contest on penalty kicks.

• The Big Red posted its first clean sheet of the season and its first since a 1-0 victory over Columbia last year on Sept. 25.

• Cornell's last two matches have resulted in draws, marking the first time the Big Red have played consecutive games without a team winning since Sept. 24 and Sept. 29, 2017, against Fairleigh Dickinson and Penn, respectively.

• It is the Big Red's first scoreless clean sheet since Sept. 9, 2021, against Syracuse. Saturday also marked the first time Cornell played a scoreless draw at home since Oct. 12, 2015, against Colgate. The previous six instances were all on the road.

Reinna Gabriel was a part of the Starting XI for the first time in 2022 and her first time in the starting lineup since last year's season finale against Dartmouth on Nov. 6, 2021.

Looking Ahead

Cornell will begin Ivy League play next Saturday when the Big Red travels to Columbia for its first conference match of 2022. First touch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and game action will be broadcast on ESPN+.
