Women's Soccer Falls to Columbia in Ivy League Opener

NEW YORK – Shira Cohen's 40th-minute tally proved to be the difference in Columbia's 1-0 Ivy League-opening victory over Cornell at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.

Cohen's goal came on an assist from Maia Tabion late in the first half. Paige Nurkin recorded a three-save clean sheet for the Lions (5-2-1, 1-0).

Aidan Julia Reineman logged two of the Big Red's three shots on goal for Cornell in the contest. Laken Gallman had the other. Erica Fox made three saves in her first start of the season for the Big Red (1-5-3, 0-1).

"Proud of the team. They fought hard, competed well, and created a few moments in the attacking third that we just couldn't finish," Cornell head coach Rob Ferguson said. "It was a good, even game of soccer back and forth. We are bitterly disappointed with the outcome.

"To outshoot the opponent, on the road, in an Ivy League game is a sign of where the team is headed. I thought Columbia closed the game out well in the last 15 minutes and made it tough for us to get the momentum we were looking for."

Columbia had a pair of shots on goal in the opening 16 minutes, which Fox stopped.

Cohen netted the go-ahead goal for the Lions in the 40th minute, sending a right-footed strike toward the far post, out of reach of Fox, who dove to her left.

Four of the Lions' five shot attempts were on target in the opening 45 minutes. Only one of Cornell's five shot attempts went on goal.

The second half did not have much offense as the two teams combined for five shot attempts. Reineman and Gallman had the shots on goal for the Big Red.

Game Notes

• Saturday was the 36th meeting between the two Empire State programs. Cornell is now 20-16 all-time over the Lions, who have won 13 of the last 16 matches.

• Cornell and Columbia opened Ivy League play against each other for the 14th consecutive season and the 20th time over the last 22 seasons of competition.

Erica Fox made her first start since Sept. 5, 2021, against Villanova. The three saves were Fox's most since stopping a career-high seven shots in her last start.

Looking Ahead

Cornell returns to Berman Field next Saturday, Oct. 1, for its first home Ivy League contest in 2022 against Penn. First touch between the Quakers and Big Red is slated for 1 p.m. Game action will be broadcast on ESPN+.
