Morales, Ka Score Twice as Men's Soccer Routs Canisius

ITHACA, N.Y. – Brandon Morales and Alioune Ka each logged five-point nights for the Cornell men's soccer team in its 8-0 rout of Canisius at Berman Field on Tuesday night.

Morales and Ka scored twice and added an assist for the Big Red, who scored the second-most goals in program history. The eight goals are the most since the program-record, 12, occurred in Cornell's 1965 season opener against Syracuse.

Connor Drought had a four-point day with his one goal and two assists. Kisa Kiingi and Emeka Eneli chipped three points apiece with a goal and an assist. Matthew Goncalves (one goal) and Nick Allen (one assist) also found their way on the scoresheet.

First-year goalkeepers Ryan Friedberg and Evan Sims combined for the clean sheet for the Big Red (5-1-0). Friedberg made one save during his 78:35 of action. Sims, who made his collegiate debut, did not face a shot in the last 11:25 of the contest.

"It was a great performance," said John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer. "We got great chances and scored some good goals. The guys worked hard the whole 90 minutes — their efforts reflected in some of the goals that were scored. The goals came fast and I felt they could have when we played Niagara the other night, but it didn't seem to fall for us. Tonight, it did."

Ely Sidibe recorded both of Canisius' shot attempts, one of which was on goal. William Howard played all 90 minutes, making 10 saves for the Golden Griffins (1-3-3).

Cornell started the game on a high note as Ka scored the first of Cornell's five first-half goals in the ninth minute. Kiingi had his pass deflected off Ka's torso, which was out of the reach of Howard.

Five minutes later, Morales netted the first of his two goals on the night, taking advantage of a failed goal kick attempt. Ka was the first Big Red player to touch the ball and quickly passed to Eneli, who set up Morales for the tally.

Kiingi scored the Big Red's third goal 10 minutes later. His blast from 25 yards out ricocheted off a Canisius defender's toe and got past Howard.

Eneli made the game 4-0 three minutes later, lasering a shot after volleying the ball to himself. Morales and Drought were credited with assists on the goal.

Ka headed a Daniel Samways corner kick in the 31st minute, but Howard was able to make the save. Canisius tried to clear the ball out of the 18-yard box, but Drought kept the ball in, sending a low-line drive shot off of Howard's hand as he was down on the ground.

Cornell added three more insurance markers in the second half, thanks to Morales in the 55th minute, Ka in the 61st minute, and Goncalves in the 81st minute.

Game Notes

• Tuesday was the fifth all-time meeting between Cornell and Canisius. The Big Red improved to 3-1-1 over the Golden Griffins.

• With the victory, the Big Red is off to its best six-game start since 2013, when Cornell opened with a 5-0-1 record.

• Cornell improved to 13-1-3 (.853) at Berman Field over the last three-plus years. The Big Red is unbeaten in 15 of its last 16 home matches.

• Morales is the first Cornell player to log consecutive multi-goal games since Daniel Haber did so on Sept. 19 and 25, 2012, against Binghamton and Hartwick, respectively.

• Cornell's five first-half goals are the most since scoring five against Harvard last season on Oct. 9. The Big Red went on to win that contest, 5-4.

• The Big Red recorded 33 shot attempts on Tuesday, 18 of which were on target. It was the most shots by a Cornell team since also recording 33 on Sept. 16, 2010, against Saint Joseph's. The 18 shots on goal are the most by a Big Red squad since at least 2009.

• It was just the second time in program history that Cornell scored at least eight goals in a match, joined by the 12-goal performance against Syracuse in 1965.

• Nick Allen's assist was his first point in a collegiate match since Oct. 20, 2018, against Brown.

Looking Ahead

Cornell concludes its three-game swing against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponents when the Big Red travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to square off against Marist. Kickoff from Tenney Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. Game action will be broadcast on ESPN3.
