Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Reineman Scores in Women's Soccer's Draw with UAlbany

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior forward Aidan Julia Reineman scored the lone goal in the 69th minute for the Cornell women's soccer team in its 1-1 draw against UAlbany at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Ashley Durik assisted Reineman's second-half goal, giving the Big Red (1-3-1) its first draw of the year.

Reineman had a team-high four shot attempts, two of which were on target. Peyton Nichols and Reagan Pauwels each registered a shot on goal in the contest.

"It's a result that leaves us relieved and disappointed at the same time," Cornell head coach Rob Ferguson said. "We had to dig ourselves out of a hole, which we created ourselves, and it's important we got that done. We showed character and commitment. It was good to see we could adapt and play in a very different style in the last 30 minutes to impact the outcome of a game."

UAlbany scored first following a shot by Selma Elverum that Nicole Shulman stopped. Capitalizing on the rebound was Olivia Piraino, who deposited a 15-yard strike past Shulman to put the Great Danes ahead.

Shulman made one save over her 90-minute outing between the pipes.

The best scoring opportunity for Cornell in the first half came in the 33rd minute when Pauwels took a shot from 25 yards out. UAlbany's goalkeeper, Megan Hart, got a hand on the ball before it hit the crossbar, ultimately resulting in a Big Red corner kick.

Cornell had a 5-2 advantage in shot attempts over the first 45 minutes, with both teams registering a pair of shots on goal. Pauwels and Nichols had the Big Red's shots on goal in the first half.

Neither team registered a shot on goal until Reineman tied the game at 1-all in the 69th minute. Durik dribbled down the end line from the left flank, sending a pass inside the 18-yard box for Reineman, who sent a right-footed strike into the bottom left corner of the goal to tie the game.

Following Reineman's game-tying goal, Cornell peppered Hart with four shot attempts over seven minutes. Reineman had the lone shot on goal of the four attempts, kicking a one-timed pass from Lily Ellingson, which Hart saved.

Mia Gonzalez had a chance to give Cornell its first lead of the night in the 83rd minute, but her shot from the right side of the pitch rolled wide of the far post.

UAlbany missed a header in the 89th minute in an attempt to break the tie. A cross from the left side of the field was headed wide by Ashley Ladner.

Game Notes

• Wednesday was the eighth all-time meeting between the Big Red and Great Danes. Cornell continues to lead the all-time series, 3-2-3. All three draws between the two teams have come in the last four matches.

• With Wednesday's match ending in a draw, the last five times Cornell and UAlbany have played each other have resulted in a game being decided by one goal or less.

• Reineman snapped a 32-game goalless streak, scoring for the first time since netting her first collegiate tally against Siena on Sept. 3, 2018.

• Cornell has scored in its first five matches in 2022, which is the program's longest season-opening goal streak since the 2014 squad scored in its first six games.

Looking Ahead

Cornell continues its three-game road trip inside the Empire State on Sunday when the Big Red plays Syracuse on Sunday, with a slated 3:30 first touch. Game action will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
