Men’s Tennis Posts Pair of Victories Over St. John’s, Niagara

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell men's tennis team continued its winning ways on Sunday afternoon with a pair of victories over St. John's and Niagara at the Reis Tennis Center.

The Big Red defeated St. John's, 5-2, before posting a 6-1 victory over Niagara in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader.

Cornell, after winning its spring opener on Saturday against Buffalo, has opened its last three spring seasons with a 3-0 record.

St. John's Recap

Sophomores Radu Papoe and Adit Sinha posted a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles against St. John's Carl Gustafsson and Anton Stendal to give Cornell the first point of the day.

A pair of straight-set victories in the first two singles matches to finish gave Cornell a 3-0 lead over the Red Storm.

Papoe dropped just one game in his No. 1 singles match against Diogo Marques, who was ranked No. 113 in the most recent ITA rankings, 6-1, 6-0.

Freshman Petar Teodorovic (No. 3 singles) lost just three games in his straight-set victory over Filipe Grebentsov, 6-2, 6-1.

St. John's recorded both of its points in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches as Anton Stendal defeated Aman Sharma, 6-2, 6-3, and Sergio Molina posted a 7-6 (5), 6-4 upset victory over No. 116-ranked Jack McCarthy.

Senior Vladislav Melnic (No. 2 singles) and Sinha (No. 4 singles) each avenged losing the first set in their respective matches with wins in the final two sets to solidify the Big Red's victory.

Adit Sinha, No. 116-ranked Jack McCarthy, Aman Sharma, Muhammad Dossani, and Tomas Salgado all posted straight-set victories for the Big Red.

The victory for Salgado in No. 6 singles was his first in a dual format, defeating Robert Vaca, 6-1, 6-4.

Freshman Noah Eisenberg, in his collegiate debut, fell to Niagara's Jorge Sedeno in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (3).
