Wrestling Wins First Nine Matches, Tops Columbia 30-3

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cole Handlovic's overtime takedown at 157 pounds wasn't the deciding moment of Cornell's 30-3 win over Columbia, but it may have been the most illustrative of the Big Red victory. Cornell won six matches against the Lions' ranked wrestlers and captured three wins by a takedown or less in winning its eighth straight dual overall and its 36th consecutive against Columbia.

Handlovic earned a takedown in the waning seconds of regulation to send his match against No. 22 Cesar Alvan to overtime, then countered a shot by the Lion for a takedown in the first 30 seconds of sudden victory to pick up the 6-4 triumph. That extended the Big Red's dual lead to 23-0, and when Benny Baker topped David Berkowich a match later, Cornell had sealed the win with three bouts to go.

Cornell won in ways big and small, setting up a pair of home duals next weekend against Princeton and Penn with the Ivy title on the line.

The Big Red ran off wins in its first five matches to take a 16-0 lead into intermission, including a 12-3 major decision victory by Vito Arujau at 133 pounds. The junior claimed a 12-3 victory over No. 30 Angelo Rini, one of three Big Red victories over ranked Lion wrestlers by halftime.

Freshmen Brett Ungar (125) and Vince Cornella (141) both won one-point decisions over ranked Lions. Ungar scored the lone takedown in a 2-1 win over No. 32 Nick Babin, while Cornella gained a riding time point to claim a 5-4 triumph over No. 26 Matthew Kazimir.

It didn't get any better for the Lions after halftime, as top-ranked Yianni Diakomihalis cruised to 17-5 win over No. 33 Danny Fongaro. Cornell won its first four after the break, including Handlovic's comeback and a Benny Baker victory at 165. Chris Foca also majored No. 32 Lenox Wolak. Columbia's only win of the night came at 184 pounds to close the dual, as  time ran out on Ethan Hatcher in a 4-2 defeat to Aaron Ayzerov.
