Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Seger Shines in Return to Union as #18 Men's Hockey Routs Dutchmen

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — In his first game at Messa Rink since transferring from Union, junior Gabriel Seger posted his third career three-point game, aiding the No. 18-ranked Cornell men's hockey team to a 6-1 victory over the Dutchmen on Friday night.

Seger scored a goal and logged a pair of assists to record his third career three-point game.

Senior Jack Malone registered his first career multi-goal game with his two tallies.

Fellow seniors Sam Malinski (two assists) and Ben Berard (one goal, one assist) also had multi-point nights for Cornell (9-5-1, 6-3-0 ECAC), who is now 7-1-1 over its last nine games.

Ian Shane stopped 18 Union shots for the Big Red en route to his eighth victory of the season.

How It Happened

Cornell jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to senior defenseman Sebastian Dirven scoring two minutes into the contest.

Dirven's shot from the point evaded traffic in front of Union's goal and going through the five hole of Dutchmen goaltender Connor Murphy.

Murphy made 20 saves in his 40-minute outing in goal. Kyle Chauvette replaced Murphy in the third period, stopping all five shots he faced..

Junior defenseman Tim Rego and Berard scored late in the opening period to increase Cornell's lead to 3-0 heading into the first intermission.

Neither team found the back of the net in the first 10 minutes of the second period before Union cut into the Big Red lead.

Owen Farris netted the Dutchmen's lone goal of the night on a goalmouth scramble. The play was reviewed by the officials, but stood as called.

Not quite three minutes later, Malone scored the first of Cornell's two power-plays goals in a 28-second span to increase the Big Red lead to 5-1. Seger netted the other power-play marker.

As the second period neared its conclusion, Malone tallied his second goal of the night, capitalizing on a Union turnover in its defensive end.

Offense came at a premium in the third period as both teams evenly split the 10 shots on goal in the 20-minute segment.
