Ramsey Becomes Field Hockey's All-Time Leading Scorer In 4-2 Win Over Lehigh

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior All-American Caroline Ramsey is one of a kind, and after Sunday's 4-2 win over defending Patriot League champion Lehigh (8-3) at Marsha Dodson Field, she truly stands alone.

Ramsey was credited with the go-ahead goal and assisted on two other scores to become Cornell's all-time leading point scorer while simultaneously becoming the first Big Red player to reach the 100-point milestone. Already the school's career goals leader (45), she ended the day with 101 points to pass Krysten Mayers '18, who previously held the record with 99 points.
Despite her effort, 20th-ranked Cornell (6-3) wasn't a one-person show on Sunday, controlling the action with a 21-4 edge in shots and an 8-3 edge in penalty corners. Six players recorded a point, with Olivia Friedberg, Hanke Govaert and Sarah Rogalski each finding a goal and Ashley Plzak, Julia Ramsey and Claire Wolfe credited with an assist.

Lehigh's goals came from Bailee Sunderland and Guusje Hogendoorn, with Lotte Smorenburg and Kiki Mes earning assists. Jenny Canoni made four saves, with the Mountain Hawks making two additional defensive saves behind her.

Despite being out-shot 11-2 in the first half, Lehigh grabbed the early lead on a giveaway in front of the goal that Sunderland cleaned up past Big Red goalkeeper Martha Broderick in the 13th minute. Less than a minute into the second quarter, the Big Red equalized when Olivia Friedberg was on the finishing end of a give-and-go with Ashley Plzak. It stayed that way entering the break.

Cornell scored quickly in the second half with Caroline Ramsey's 14th score of the season, which proved to be her fifth game-winner in the team's 6-3 start. A clean stop by Wolfe after a quick feed by Julia Ramsey allowed her older sister to beat the keeper stick side less than three minutes in. It went to 3-1 several minutes later when Caroline Ramsey sent a long pass into the circle which Hanke Govaert batted in.

The Mountain Hawks clawed back within 3-2 when Hogendoorn's penalty corner shot found the cage with 3:13 left in the third, but Cornell again dominated the rest of the way. Caroline Ramsey picked up her second assist of the day with just over five minutes remaining in regulation when she carried past a defender and sent a centering pass back in front of goal that Rogalski struck true that all but sealed the victory.

Cornell will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 3 when it meets Central New York rival Colgate at 4 p.m. at Marsha Dodson Field. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
