Field Hockey Scores Ivy-Record 12 Goals In Win Over Colgate

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Caroline Ramsey, sophomore Grace Leahy and freshman Ashley Plzak scored three goals apiece as the 20th-ranked Cornell field hockey team set a new Ivy League and school single-game record for goals and points in a 12-4 win over Colgate on Tuesday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. The Big Red improved to 7-3, while the Raiders slipped to 3-7.

Cornell tied the Ivy single-game record for goals (12) and established a new mark for points (34) in a game, Leahy and Plzak set career highs in goals and Ramsey added an assist for a seven-point game. Princeton had scored 12 goals in a 1997 win vs. Columbia, while the previous mark for points was 31 by Princeton against Delaware in 2012 (10 goals, 11 assists). With her 39 points on the season, Caroline Ramsey is now one off the single-season Big Red record she established in 2021 (40). Cornell's 39 shots ranks as the seventh-most in a game in school history. In all, 11 different players registered at least one point as Cornell obliterated previous marks for goals (nine, done four times) and points (27 vs. Bryant in 2008).

Along with the hat trick trio, Antonia Packard, Julia Ramsey and Claire Wolfe each tallied scores, with both Ramsey and Wolfe adding an assist. Elizabeth Friedberg was credited with two assists, with Rease Coleman, Olivia Friedberg, Vivienne Mueller and Sarah Rogalski each posting one. Martha Broderick picked up her seventh win of the season in goal, making one save. The Big Red held a 39-8 edge in shots and a 14-5 advantage on penalty corners in the win.

Ella Murphy had a goal and two assists to lead the Raiders, while goalkeeper Hayley Campbell made 10 saves over the final 45 minutes despite seeing an onslaught of 30 shots over that span. Alice Walton, Dani Palmer and Morgan Willis each had a score for the visitors.

Cornell scored at least two goals in each quarter, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes on goals by Leahy, Caroline Ramsey and Plzak. The Raiders tightened the game with consecutive goals 2:30 apart in the second to get within 3-2, but Cornell scored two more with Plzak and Wolfe finding the back of the cage to go into the break with a 5-2 edge.

The second half onslaught continued, scoring four in the third to tie the single game record, then three more in the fourth to break it. Julia Ramsey's second goal of the season two minutes into the fourth surpassed the previous mark of nine goals, last done against Dartmouth in 2016.

The Big Red returns to Ivy League play on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 12 p.m. when it welcomes Yale to Marsha Dodson Field. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
