Mercyhurst On Tap For Big Red Women's Ice Hockey

ERIE, Pa. -  The Cornell women's ice hockey will travel to Mercyhurst Ice Center for weekend action against the Mercyhurst Lakers.

Opening Week Rewind

Game One
The No.10-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team defeated No.13-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions 4-1 on Friday night in the season opener from Lynah Rink. Cornell moved to 1-0-0 on the season, while the Nittany Lions dropped to 1-5-1.

Junior forward Katie Chan, a transfer from Colgate, netted two Big Red goals in her Big Red debut. Freshman goaltender Annelies Bergmann, who took the net for the first time of her Cornell career, registered 14 saves between the pipes and accumulated a .933 save percentage.

Game Two
The No. 10-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team earned a 5-2 victory on the second side of a back-to-back against No. 13-ranked Penn State, completing the weekend sweep. Izzy Daniel registered three helpers in the contest, going to Mckenna Van Gelder on a power play, Lily Delianedis, and Georgia SchiffClaudia Yu and Daniel also registered Big Red goals.

Game Three
The Cornell women's ice hockey team surged past Syracuse on Tuesday night by a score of 7-0. Cornell moved to 3-0-0 on the season, while the Orange fell to 3-4-0. Deanna Fraser started between the pipes, registering 12 saves. Katie Chan and Avi Adam score two goals apiece in the contest. Izzy Daniel, Rory Guilday, and Kaitlin Jockims also found the back of the net for the Big Red. Gabbie Rud was responsible for four helpers, which is her career-high in a game.

The Series
Cornell  currently leads the all-time series, 14-17-5. The squads met twice last season, with the Big Red running away with both games in a 7-2 victory , and a 3-0 shutout at Lynah Rink. The Lakers earned their most recent win over Cornell during the 2021-22 season by a score of 2-3 in East Hill.

Opponent Breakdown
Mercyhurst will enter the night with a 3-5-0 record. The Lakers are currently 3-1 at home after opening the season with a sweep at Post, and a split with St. Cloud State.

Thea Johansson (seven - 4g, 3a), Sara Boucher (six - 2g, 4a), Marielle Parks (four - 4g, 0a), and Kylee Mahoney (four - 2g, 2a) are at the top of the team's leader board in points. Ena Nystrom has started  eight games between the pipes, registering 216 saves and a .908 save percentage.

Sharing The Wealth
The Big Red showed to be unselfish with the puck in the weekend opener against Penn State. Cornell accumulated 13 assists and featured seven different goal scorers over the course of the two games.

Chan is tied for the team lead in goals with four. Daniel is the front runners as far as points are concerned, with nine (2g, 7a). Karel Prefontaine and Gabbie Rud are second on the squad in assists, both having served four this season.

Cornell had nine different goal scorers this previous week. Included in the group of scorers are Chan, Delianedis, Daniel, Mckenna Van Gelder, Kaitlin Jockims, Claudia Yu, Georgia Schiff, Rory Guilday, and Avi Adam.

Bergmann was the net minder in both of Cornell's matchups against Penn State. The freshman goaltender racked up 32 saves, and holds a .914 save percentage.

Fraser protected the net against Syracuse, earning 12 saves and a shutout victory over the Orange.

Daniel, 100th Career Point
Izzy Daniel exploded for a six-point weekend, registering her points on one goal and five assists. Daniel eclipsed her 100th-career point in the process, now having 108.
 

Follow The Action
Cornell will visit Mercyhurst this weekend for a two-game non-conference affair. Puck drop is slated for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at Mercyhurst Ice Center. Game action will be broadcast on FloSports.
