PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Conference road games are hard, and Friday afternoon was no different for the Cornell field hockey team. A
Caroline Ramsey penalty corner goal and five critical saves from
Martha Broderick allowed the Big Red to grind out a 1-0 win over Brown at Goldberger Family Field. Cornell won its sixth straight game to improve to 11-3 (5-1 Ivy), matching a school record for wins in a season, while the Bears fell to 5-8 (1-5 Ivy).
The All-American and three-year captain extended her single-season school record goal total to 21 and posted her seventh game-winning goal with her 25th-minute score. Broderick continued her hot play with a third shutout in four games, though this one was much more challenging than the other two, where she didn't face a shot on goal. She made five stops, including three in short succession in the third quarter, to pick up her 11th win of the season between the pipes.
Brown held the high-scoring Big Red at bay nearly all afternoon, holding a 10-9 edge in shots with both teams attempting four corners. It was the Big Red's proficiency on set pieces, yet again, that proved to be the difference.
Brown controlled the first quarter, but the Big Red withstood the early challenge and put itself in front on a penalty corner goal by Ramsey.
Jenna Villeneuve sent the ball into
Claire Wolfe, whose stop allowed Ramsey to drag the ball past Brown goalkeeper Ella Edmonds. Brown held a 6-4 edge in shots, but Cornell had the edge in corners (3-2). Broderick had a pair of saves for the clean sheet in the first half.
Broderick had three big saves in the third quarter, including two highlight-reel stops, to keep Cornell in the lead, which was never threatened in the fourth as the visitors seemed on the verge of a second goal that never came. Cornell had all four shots and the lone corner in the final 15 minutes to claim the team's 11th victory of the year, matching the total accomplished four times previously (2008, 10, 14, 15).
Winners of 10 of its past 11 contests, Cornell will celebrate Senior Day when it welcomes Boston University to Marsha Dodson Field on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN+.
