Big Red Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets to Dartmouth in Hanover

HANOVER, N.H. -- The Cornell volleyball team fell in straight sets to Dartmouth on Saturday night from Leede Arena. Cornell dropped to 6-13 overall and 4-6 in Ivy League play, while the Big Green improved to 8-11 and 5-5.

Junior middle blocker Camryn Carlo led the Cornell attack with seven kills and three total blocks. Other notables for the Big Red included Eliza Konvicka (five kills and a team-high five blocks) and Sydney Moore (four kills, four blocks). Ellie Blain had ten kills to lead the Big Green, who have now won seven straight matches over Cornell.

The Big Red and the Big Green battled early in the first set, splitting the first eight points. But a service error by Cornell proved to be the early difference maker, as Dartmouth took a 5-4 lead. Cornell would keep the deficit to as low as two later in the set, as a kill by Brooke Cooper made the score 8-6. Dartmouth would not let its foot off the gas pedal, however, speeding ahead for a 25-14 win in the opener.

The red and white tried to regain momentum in the second set, as two kills by Cooper paired with a Big Green service error gave Cornell a 5-4 advantage. Dartmouth would regain the magic right after, winning six out of seven points to retake the lead, 10-7. Dartmouth would continue to build on its cushion until Mallus, Moore, and Konvicka combined for three kills and two blocks to put the pressure back on the Big Green at 21-17. Despite the run, Dartmouth ended the second set on a 3-0 run to take the second, 25-20.

The third set started very similar to the opening frame, as Cornell and Dartmouth battled to an early 7-7 stalemate. Dartmouth would stay tall, ripping off a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead and force a Big Red timeout. The stoppage would not slow down the Big Green, as it rattled off six more points in a row to take a 17-7 advantage. The red and white continued to battle despite being down by double-digits, as Camryn Carlo recorded three kills to keep the deficit at ten (20-10). But the Dartmouth defense would be too much to handle, as consecutive blocks by the Big Green sealed the match for Dartmouth, who swept the season series against Cornell for the third straight season.

Match Notes
