Men's Tennis Battles in Day Three of ITA Regionals

10/8/2023 5:10:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's tennis team had a rough day three at the ITA Regionals hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, winning one out of six matches.

The lone doubles team of Samuel Paquette and Aman Sharma opened day three of competition for the Big Red against Columbia's Henry Ruger and Ishaan Ravichander. The senior and sophomore held their own against their Lions counterparts, but Ruger and Ravichander came out with an 8-5 win.

Five Big Red athletes also competed in the round of 32 in singles. Samuel Paquette was up first for Cornell, matching up against Buffalo's Daniils Snaiders. Paquette struggled in the first set but flipped the momentum to take the second (6-2), pushing the match to a third set. Both athletes battled hard throughout the tiebreaking set, but Snaiders pulled away with a 6-4 win to take the match over the senior (4-6, 6-2, 4-6). Muhammad Dossani was next on the bracket for Cornell, taking on Penn's Kian Vakili. The senior struggled to gain mojo throughout the set, falling in straight sets to the sophomore (6-3, 6-2).

Felipe Pinzon had arguably the most exciting match of the round of 32 in his battle against NJIT's Wil Jenkins. The freshman dropped a tightly contested first set (5-7), giving the momentum to Jenkins. However, Pinzon battled back in the second, flipping the script to take a 6-4 win to push the match to a third set. Pinzon tried to keep the magic going, but Jenkins would pull away to take the final set, 6-3, dropping the Big Red to 0-3 on the day in singles. Aman Sharma was the fourth player in action for the Big Red against Ivy League foe Ishaan Ravichander from Columbia, falling 0-6, 2-6.

But Bradley Paliska would not let the Big Red finish the day without a win, as the senior took down Lehigh's Matt Kleiman (6-3, 6-2) to move on to the round of 16. Paliska will match up with St. John's Ryota Kaneda on Monday at 10:00 a.m.
