Women's Hoops Gets First Win Of the Season at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Big Red women's basketball team outlasted a late fourth quarter push by Southern Illinois to grab its first win of the season, 80-77, at the Banterra Center on Saturday afternoon. Cornell improves to 1-1 (0-0 Ivy) while the Salukis fall to 1-1 (0-0 MVC). The 80 Big Red points marks the most since Dec. 28, 2022 when the Big Red downed Division II opponent 93-49.

Sophomore Emily Pape led the way with 26 points, her most since tallying 27 at Brown on Jan. 28, 2023. Pape was one of three Big Red players with a team-high six rebounds. Junior Summer Parker-Hall and sophomore Vivienne Knee each accounted for the other sets of six. Senior captain Kaya Ingram ranked second on the team in points, accounting for 14. Parker-Hall followed with 11 points. Freshmen Azareya Kilgoe and Rachel Kaus each notched new career-highs with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Kilgoe led the Big Red in assists with six.

Shemera Williams led the Salukis with 19 points, followed by Jaidynn Mason, who accounted for 18. Laniah Randle was the only other double-digit scorer for SIU, who tallied 12 points in addition to a game-best 14 rebounds.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Southern Illinois got on the boards first with a long two jumper on the first possession of the game, but Parker-Hall had the answer on the first Cornell possession with a wrap around layup off an inbounds pass.
  • SIU followed with a 9-2 run to build a seven-point lead before Rachel Kaus hit one-of-two free throws before the media timeout.
  • Kilgoe came out of the break with the hot hand, downing two threes to know the game at 11 while the Big Red defense held the Salukis without a point until 2:22 remained in the first.
  • Southern Illinois added eight points prior to the end of the quarter, compared the the Big Red's four, brining up a 19-15 Cornell deficit after one.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Pape powered the Big Red to its first lead of the day to open the second half when she got to the basket on her own to net a layup followed by a corner three to lead 20-19.
  • Clarke Jackson built the lead with a layup, but a pair of Saluki free throws and a layup gave SIU a 24-23 lead.
  • Cornell outscored the Salukis 14-10 to close the quarter with a 37-34 lead.

THIRD QUARTER

  • The Big Red had its biggest quarter since scoring 29 in the opening quarter against Clarion. The Big Red piled on 28, and led by as many as 12 after a Jackson layup with 4:30 remaining.
  • Cornell led 65-57 at the end of the third.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Cornell built its lead back to ten after an Ingram layup with 7:50 remaining, but SIU began to battle back.
  • The Salukis tied the game up at 73 with 3:42 remaining, and took the lead 41 seconds later with a layup.
  • A Pape three gave the Big Red the lead again but SIU tied it up with 41 seconds left on the clock after going one-of-two from the charity stripe.
  • Ingram free throws and a Parker-Hall layup with 12 seconds to go put the game out of reach from the Salukis, securing the first Red win of the season.

UP NEXT

  • Cornell will remain on the road for three more games before the home opener. Western Kentucky is next on the schedule, slated for Monday, Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m.
