POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The No. 10-ranked Cornell women's fencing team started its 2023-24 strong at the 2023 Vassar Invitational, going 6-0, including a nail-biting 14-13 win over Ivy League foe and No. 12-ranked Yale. The Big Red went 124-36 in individual bouts over six duals. Cornell earned dominant wins over Sacred Heart (24-3), Stevens (24-3), and Drew (23-4), and more competitive 18-9 victories over Denison and Wagner to close out the invitational.

Eighteen athletes competed for the Big Red, with many standing out. In foil, first-year Brianna Lee impressed in her first event in a Cornell uniform with a 13-2 record, while sophomore Mia Jo was a perfect 8-0. Renata Chusid also had a solid outing for Cornell, going 11-2. Each competing athlete with the foil weapon had seven wins or more to help the unit go 47-7 overall. The underclassmen theme continued in epee, as sophomore Nora Weber led the way, going 9-3 in her bouts. Junior captain Emma Ni (8-4) and freshman Natalie Leung (6-2) filled out the top sheet for Cornell, who went 33-19 as a unit with the weapon. The sabre weapon unit also impressed in the Big Red's first invite of the year, going 44-10 overall, with seven of the eight competitors picking up five wins or more, including Emma Brown and Sarah Lacson, who each went 6-0 in their season debuts. 

Along with its 6-0 record on Sunday, Cornell has gone 24-1 in its last three trips to Poughkeepsie dating back to the 2021-22 season. 

UP NEXT
Cornell will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 3, as it travels to Waltham, Mass. for the Brandeis Invitational. The Big Red went a perfect 6-0 last season in its trip to the Bay State, including a 15-12 win over then No. 13-ranked St. John's University.
