Men's, Women's Polo Finish Fourth In Bill Field Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's and women's polo teams wrapped up fall competition this weekend with losses in the Bill Field Invitational.

The Big Red men (4-4) fell 19-9 to the University of Virginia in the consolation game on Saturday, and the women (4-4) lost 19-9 against USC Aiken on Friday.

Graduate senior Patricio Fraga-Errecart and sophomore Benito Jaramillo Samper led the men with three goals against UVa. Junior Christian Finlay had one.

"A disappointing finish to the tournament for our guys," Anthony Condo, the Peter B. Orthwein '68 Head Coach of Polo, said. "UVA really took control of the second half and rattled us a bit, particularly so in the third chukker when they made some substitutions.  We started to find our offensive groove once again late in the fourth, but by then it was too late to make a big difference.  We learned a lot about what we need to continue to work on as a team to be successful come postseason tournament time.  Still, I'm proud of our guys for continuing to fight through some adversity as we get the season under way."

Junior Ava Ramachandran led the women with three goals, and senior Charlotte Book had two. Junior Isabelle Braden and senior Sam Symons had one each.

"I am very proud of my team for hanging tight with the Field Tournament's top-seed in USC Aiken," Condo said. "Down by only 2 (5-7) at the half to such a talented squad shows that we can compete at their level.  In the end, the turned the heat up a bit on us and won going away.  I told my team not to hang their heads over this one, as we saw once again how much determination and grit this team possesses."

North Texas won the men's bracket, and UVa won the women's side. Both Cornell teams finished in fourth place.
