Fourth Quarter Surge Leads Women's Basketball to 58-53 Victory Over Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Cornell women's basketball team woke up in the fourth quarter from Sojka Pavilion, outscoring the Bucknell Bison 15-8 en route to a 58-53 victory on Saturday afternoon from the keystone state. Cornell bumped its record to 4-4 overall, while Bucknell fell to 2-6.

Sophomore Emily Pape led the Cornell offensive attack with 20 points on 9-19 shooting from the field, including two three-pointers to go along with nine rebounds. It is the second time Pape has notched 20 or more points already in the 2023-24 season, as the Park Ridge, Ill. product had 26 in a victory over Southern Illinois on Nov. 11. Pape was not the only Big Red athlete in double-figures, as Kaya Ingram notched 11 points, including seven in the final frame to secure the first victory in Sojka Pavilion in program history.

Other notables included Summer Parker-Hall with nine points, six rebounds, and two blocks and Azareya Kilgore with six points, six rebounds, and a team-high three assists in the win for Cornell, who forced 14 Bison turnovers and only gave up the ball a season-low six times.

Ashley Sofilkanich led Bucknell with a career-high 22 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks in the loss, which snapped a four-game winning streak for the Bison dating to the 2012-2013 season.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Summer Parker-Hall picked up the first bucket of the game for either team, snatching the ball away from Ashley O'Connor and gliding down the floor to give Cornell a 2-0 advantage. Kaya Ingram and Mia Beam followed that up with a trap near half court that caused another Bucknell turnover, leading to a jumper for Emily Pape to stretch the Big Red's lead to 4-0.
  • Cornell's defense would continue to give Buckell fits for almost four minutes until Ashley Sofilkanich scored on a putback layup to give the Bisons its first points, making the score 6-2.
  • The Big Red offense continued to keep its foot on the gas pedal, as Rachel Kaus found Pape alone in the corner for a three, followed by a dashing layup by Ingram with the shot clock trickling down to give Cornell its largest lead of the quarter at 13-6.
  • Bucknell started to find its rhythm late in the quarter, finishing on a 5-2 run to close the Big Red's lead to four after the first 10 minutes.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Azareya Kilgoe started the scoring in the second stanza with back-to-back buckets on a turnaround jumper and a nifty floater in the lane to push the Big Red's lead back up to eight. The underclassmen theme would continue again as Kaus followed her teammate with consecutive buckets to put Cornell up 12 and force a Bison stoppage.
  • Ashley Sofilkanich broke the dry spell of almost seven minutes that carried over for the Bison from the first quarter with her fourth made bucket of the game to push the deficit back down to ten.
  • Pape continued to have her way on the court as she splashed in her eleventh point off a hot pass from Kilgoe to tick the lead back up to 12.
  • Despite the lead, that would be the last bucket of the first half for the Big Red, as an Emma Theodorsson lead sparked a 14-1 run to slice Cornell's lead down to only one heading into the locker room. Cornell went 0-6 down the stretch, with its lone point coming off a made free throw by Parker-Hall.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Bucknell would grab its first lead of the ballgame out of the halftime stoppage as Emma Theodorsson hit a three from the top of the key to put the Bison up 30-28. Parker-Hall would match the score at 30 with a putback layup after a missed three by Ingram.
  • But the relentless Bison offense continued to trade punch for punch, jumping out on a 7-2 run highlighted by four points by Sofilkanich to grab its largest lead of the game at 39-32 and force a Big Red timeout. The stoppage sparked a 5-0 run as a Pape three paired with a Clarke Jackson steal and score cut the deficit down to four.
  • After a turnaround jumper for the Bison stopped the Cornell run, the Big Red followed that up with a 6-0 run, as Pape knocked down two more tough shots paired with a Parker-Hall jumper to tie things at 43.
  • The Bison had the last laugh of the third as Sofilkanich notched her 20th point of the afternoon to put Bucknell up by two heading into the final ten minutes.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • The Big Red put its hard hat on early in the fourth, as a driving layup by Pape and two free throws by Kilgoe gave Cornell its first lead of the second half at 47-45.
  • The back-and-forth stretch continued between the Bison and Big Red, as Caroline Dingler and Rachel Kaus traded buckets, keeping Cornell up by two. Both teams went scoreless for over a minute after the Kaus bucket until Pape batted a pass away right into the arms of Clarke Jackson. The freshman did all the rest, gliding to the rim for two to put Cornell up four.
  • Buckell continued to match Cornell's pace, going on a 4-0 run to tie things back up at 51.
  • With crunch time on the horizon, the Big Red needed someone to put it away. Senior captain Kaya Ingram filled that role, driving into the teeth of the Bison defense for an acrobatic layup plus a free throw to put Cornell up by three. Bucknell would answer with two more free throws to push it back to a one-point deficit until Ingram rewinded her previous shot with another highlight-reel layup to put Cornell back up 56-53.
  • After a Bucknell timeout, the Big Red needed just one more stop on the defensive end to escape Lewisburg with the victory. And Summer Parker-Hall got it done, rejecting an Isabella King three-pointer and grabbing the rebound and handing it to Ingram. And with the momentum on her side, Ingram aced both free throws to secure the 58-53 win for Cornell and the program's first win over the Bison since Dec. 18, 2011.

UP NEXT

  • Cornell will return home for just the second time this season when it battles St. Bonaventure on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 7:00 p.m. from Newman Arena. The Big Red currently have a two-game winning streak over the Bonnies, including a 70-42 victory in its last matchup on Dec. 29, 2019.
