WALTHAM, Mass. -- The No. 10-ranked Cornell women's fencing team had a strong showing at the 2023 Brandeis Invitational, going 6-1 Sunday from Red Auerbach Arena. The Big Red earned a 123-66 record in individual bouts over its seven duals. Cornell earned a dominant 27-0 decision over Yeshiva and three 18-9 wins over Brown, MIT, and the host Judges. The Big Red had to work for its other two victories, securing slim 15-12 decisions over Tufts and Wellesley. The lone loss on the afternoon came via an 15-12 decision to Boston College.

Fifteen athletes suited up for Cornell, with two making their season debuts over the seven bouts. The foil unit led the way for the Big Red, as each competitor secured at least seven individual wins en route to a 46-17 overall record. Junior captain Rei Weintraub led the charge for the Big Red with a 12-2 record, including sweeps in three of the seven duals, while first-year Brianna Lee picked up where she left off after a strong performance almost a month ago in Poughkeepsie, finishing 12-6. Two Cornell fencers also made their season debuts as seniors Alexandra Abayeva (7-2) and Molly Veerkamp (7-3) had solid outings.

Cornell's Sabre unit also picked up where it left off after a 44-10 record at the Vassar Invite, going 45-18 on the afternoon. Each of the five competing fencers with the weapon picked up seven wins or more, with first-year Isabela Carvalho leading the unit at 11-4, followed closely by Keona Moya (10-5). Junior Emma Brown continued her solid start to her third year on East Hill, going 9-2. Fiona Neibart (8-3) and Stella Berman (7-4) rounded out the records for the Big Red. And in epee, freshman Natalie Leung (8-7) and Nawal O'Neil (6-4) led the scoring sheet for the group of five, who finished 32-31 overall with the weapon.

With Sunday's result, the Big Red is now an impressive 22-1 in its three trips to the Bay State under head coach Ariana Klinkov. Cornell heads into the winter break at 12-1 overall, making it the fourth-straight year the team has above a .820 winning percentage before the new year.
