tITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's basketball team scored the first 12 points of overtime to hold off Dartmouth 95-83 on Friday evening at Newman Arena. The win snapped a three-game skid for the Big Red and moved the Big Red into a fourth-place tie with Brown in the Ivy standings with three games to play.
Nazir Williams scored 27 points and added six assists and three steals,
Sean Hansen posted his first career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and both
Greg Dolan and
Isaiah Gray had 17 points apiece.
Chris Manon rounded out the five starters in double figures with 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting. Cornell shot 48 percent overall and connected on 10-of-24 from beyond the 3-point arc. The home team had 17 assists and 12 steals in the win, outscoring the Big Green 42-30 in the paint and 22-6 on fastbreaks.Â
Ryan Cornish and Dusan Neskovic each had 19 points for the Big Green, who shot 57 percent from the floor in the second half before going cold in overtime, hitting just 1-of-9 shots from the floor. Dame Adelekun had nine points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots, but also turned the ball over five times as Dartmouth coughed the ball up 22 times as a team.
Cornell led by six at the half and by three with a minute to play, but the Big Green knotted the score on an Adelekun dunk with 16 seconds remaining. The Big Red turned the ball over in the final seconds, but the Big Green rimmed out a potential game-winning 3-pointer by the center as time expired, sending it to overtime.
Once there, it was all Big Red.
Manon's driving layup put the home team back in the lead, and Gray's driving bucket on the ensuing possession built the lead to four. The dagger came after
Nazir Williams drew an offensive foul on the much bigger Adelekun on the defensive end, and Hansen found Dolan open for a 3-pointer to push the lead to 87-80 with just under three minutes left. The Big Green had a momentary window after Cornell missed a pair of free throws, but consecutive 3-point misses ended with Hansen again finding Dolan for a trey, this time with 80 seconds left, to push the advantage to double figures.Â
