PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore
Sullivan Mack scored two third-period goals, and fellow sophomore
Ian Shane recorded a 14-save shutout, to aid the No. 13-ranked Cornell men's hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Brown at Meehan Auditorium on Friday night.
The two-goal night for Mack was his second career multi-goal performance, with the first coming earlier this year on Dec. 29 against AIC.
Shane's shutout was the seventh of his collegiate career as Cornell improved to 17-9-2 overall and 14-6-1 in ECAC Hockey action.
Joining Mack on the scoresheet for the Big Red was junior forward
Jack O'Leary and senior forwards
Zach Tupker and
Ben Berard.
Mathieu Caron matched his career high for saves, stopping 42 Cornell shots in his first start in over a month in the setback for Brown (9-17-2, 5-14-2 ECAC).
"I thought we had good patience throughout the night," said
Mike Schafer '86, the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Ice Hockey. "We gave up four shots in the first and then they had a couple on their power play, but we did a great job locking it down defensively in the third. It was a big win for us."
How It Happened
O'Leary opened the scoring just over six minutes into the contest thanks to a quick pass by junior forward
Kyle Penney from behind Brown's net. Receiving the pass in the mid-slot, O'Leary lasered a wrist shot past Caron to break the scoreless tie. Sophomore forward
Kyler Kovich also was credited with an assist on the tally.
Brown had a 2-on-1 odd-man rush in the second period, but Gavin Puskar's one-timer from low in the right faceoff circle was stopped by Shane as his cross-crease save preserved the Big Red's one-goal lead.
Berard extended Cornell's lead with a snap shot from a low angle under the left faceoff circle with 5:16 left in the second period. The play was set up following a loose puck on the half wall that was picked up by freshman
Nick DeSantis.
Just six seconds following the media timeout in the third period, Mack further increased the Big Red's lead.
Tupker won the faceoff and took a shot off a carom off the near boards, leading to the rebound making its way to the mid slot where Mack sent a shot off the crossbar that immediately fell down into the net.
Mack scored his second goal of the night 2:27 after his initial tally. Senior forward
Jack Malone and sophomore forward
Ondrej Psenicka set up the marker, which featured Mack utilizing a toe-drag to create separation from the closest Brown defender.
Cornell tacked on an insurance marker with 1:17 left in the contest thanks to a back-door pass from O'Leary to Tupker, who sent the puck into an open right side of the goal.

• Kovich recorded his first assist since logging his first career assist on Nov. 6, 2021 against Dartmouth, snapping a 26-game drought.
• With his shutout, Shane is now tied with Brian Cropper and Errol McKibbon for the 10th-most shutouts while playing for Cornell.
Looking Ahead
Cornell will conclude its 2022-23 regular season on Saturday when it heads to New Haven, Conn., to battle another Ancient Eight rival in Yale. Puck drop from Ingalls Rink is slated for 7 p.m., with game action broadcast on ESPN+ and on WHCU (870 AM, 97.7 FM).
A regulation victory for the Big Red would ensure an outright Ivy League title for Cornell, which would be the program's 25th title. With a win in overtime or a shootout, Cornell would share the Ancient Eight title with Harvard.
