NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- EJ Jarvis had 34 points and 10 rebounds and a miserable shooting start to the second half buried Cornell in a 76-58 defeat at Yale on Saturday evening at the John J. Lee Amphitheater. The Bulldogs (19-7, 9-4 Ivy) will play for a share of the Ivy title next weekend, while the Big Red (16-10, 6-7 Ivy) will play for the final spot in the Ancient Eight tournament.
Jarvis made 13-of-18 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and John Poulakidas (14 points) and August Mahoney (12 points, seven rebounds) also reached double figures for a Bulldogs team that shot 55 percent for the game, including 63 percent in the decisive second half.Â
Nazir Williams scored 15 points to lead three Big Red players in double figures, with both
Isaiah Gray and
Guy Ragland Jr. added 13 apiece. Ragland added nine rebounds.
Chris Manon had five points and four steals, breaking Cornell's single-season steals record with his 55th and 56th. The previous record of 54 was held by DeShawn Standard '98 (in 1997-98) and Wallace Prather '02 (in 2001-02). The team's 11 steals also pushed it past the season record as a team, with its 251 more than the 243 from the 2009-10 campaign.
Despite the loss, Cornell enters the final weekend against Columbia needing a win and a Brown loss to Yale to put the Big Red in its third Ivy League Tournament.Â
