#17 Stanford Pulls Away In Second Half, Hands Women's Lacrosse Its First Loss

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- A 7-1 second half run by Stanford pushed the 17th-ranked Cardinal past Cornell 17-12 on Monday evening at Calgan Field. The home team improved to 2-2, while the Big Red slipped to 3-1 on the season.

Five second quarter saves by Kara Rahaim and 12 stops overall was teamed up with a balanced offense and Stanford pulled away after the break to hand Cornell its first loss of the season. In all, 10 different players tallied a goal for the Cardinal, with Sarah Jaques leading the way with three goals and three assists. Ashley Humphrey added three goals and Jay Browne tallied two goals and two assists.

Katie Castiello and Amanda Cramer each tallied four times to lead the Big Red offense, while Shannon Brazier notched a pair of goals, four draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover. Chloe Maister also caused two turnovers and Caitlin Tully won three draws while causing a miscue. The Big Red held a 38-30 shot advantage, won the ground ball battle (18-15) and at the draw circle (17-16). Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week Ellie Horner suffered her first collegiate loss despite making five saves in goal.



The Cardinal jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first only to see the Big Red roar back and knot the game at 5-5 with Cramer scoring the first three of the Big Red goals. The home team ended the first half with three consecutive goals and held Cornell without a score over the final 11:58 of the half. Stanford's 8-5 edge at halftime came on the strength of eight different goal scorers.

The teams traded goals to start the third, with a Castiello strike with 5:58 left enough to cut the Cardinal lead to 10-7. Then the home team took control. 

Four straight and seven of the following eight goals went to the home team, with Jaques scoring twice and assisting on two others during the run. With Stanford holding a nearly insurmountable 17-8 edge with 4:22 left, Cornell played make-it, take-it over the next three minutes, shaving four scores off the final margin, including three extra attacker goals, two from Castiello in the span of just 41 seconds.
