PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Senior
Greg Dolan scored a career-high 29 points, but Penn's dominance on the glass, especially on the offensive end, allowed the Quakers to hold off Cornell for a 92-86 win on Saturday evening at the Palestra. Cornell dropped its second straight contest to fall to 15-7 (5-4 Ivy), while the Quakers improved to 13-11 (5-4 Ivy).
Dolan hit 12-of-18 field goals and added five rebounds and four assists to lead four Big Red double figure scorers. The Big Red hit 13-of-42 3-pointers with Dolan,
Max Watson and
Guy Ragland Jr. hitting three apiece. Watson and
Chris Manon each netted 13 points and Ragland Jr. had 11. Cornell assisted on 18 baskets and turned it over just six times while collecting 10 steals, outscoring the home team 19-7 off turnovers.
Jordan Dingle, the nation's second-leading scorer, had 27 points with seven rebounds, but it was Lucas Monroe that allowed the Quakers to sweep its Ivy weekend. Monroe had 12 points, 13 rebounds (six offensive boards) and five assists without a turnover for a Penn squad that coughed it up 14 times. Max Marts and Clark Slajchert scored 13 each and Nick Spinoso was the fifth starter in double figures with 10 along with six assists and five rebounds. Penn shot 52 percent from the floor, including hitting 11-of-23 from beyond the arc, and assisted on 21 of its 31 baskets.
After a back-and-forth first half, Penn took the lead for good with an 8-0 run starting with just over 11 minutes to play. The Big Red got within a single possession a number of times, but couldn't even up the score.
Monroe was a difference maker in the final 20 minutes with 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for Penn.
First Half
• Penn scored the game's first four points and led 6-2 before consecutive 3-pointers by
Marcus Filien and
Max Watson gave the Big Red a lead.
• Back-and-forth play allowed the Quakers to pull out to an eight-point edge (22-14), but five straight from Dolan got it back to three, eventually climbing within two (23-21).
• The Big Red went on a big run that included a big shooter's bounce for Ragland Jr. on a 3-pointer, pushing the Big Red lead to 31-23 with 5:37 left, forcing a Penn timeout.
• Cornell's run was 17-1, including 12 straight points at one point, to turn an eight-point deficit to an eight-point lead.
• Quakers 1-of-8 from FT line to start.
The Big Red still led by six with 1:25 remaining in the half, but the home team closed the half on a 9-3 run to go into the break with a lead.
• Penn took the lead into the locker room after Dingle's runner off the glass put the home team up 42-40 at the break.
• Cornell shot just 6-of-20 from beyond the arc, while Penn was 6-of-13 from 3-point range.
• The Quakers attempted 14 free throws and shot 54 percent with the visitors turning the ball over just twice.
Second Half
• Penn maintained its lead early in the second half as the teams traded baskets.
• Cornell finally took a lead with a 6-0 run to take tvhe lead at 56-55, with consecutive steals on defense leading to a run-out dunk by Manon and a fastbreak layup by Watson.
• Two minutes later, the Big Red took a three-point lead after 3-pointers by Dolan and Ragland Jr. just 23 seconds apart to put Cornell up 62-59.
• Penn answered right back with a George Smith trey to tie it, then grabbed the lead for good when Slajchert hit two-of-three from the charity stripe with 10:41 remaining.
• The Quakers stretched the lead to nine, watched it shrink down to two, but only once gave the Big Red possession back with a chance to tie.
Next Up
• The Big Red will look for a season sweep of Brown when it visits the Bears on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
• The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
• Cornell last swept the series in 2017-18 and is in position to do it again after taking an 80-73 win over the Bears on Jan. 28 at Newman Arena.
