Men's Tennis Welcomes South Florida For Friday Match

2/8/2023 4:00:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell men's tennis team returns to action on Friday when it welcomes South Florida to the Reis Tennis Center on Friday, with doubles action beginning at 5 p.m.

Cornell is off to its second consecutive 5-0 start to a season after defeating Nebraska, 4-1, and Drake, 4-3, in its first pair of road matches in the spring slate.

In the opening match of its road swing against Nebraska, Cornell claimed victory in the first four singles matches — all in straight sets — to give the Big Red the victory. The following day, Drake held a pair of two-match leads before Cornell had a trio of three-set victories to give the Big Red the win.

Sophomore Radu Papoe, following a pair of victories against ranked opponents last week, entered the ITA singles rankings following an update on Wednesday. Papoe is ranked No. 50, which is the fourth-highest by an Ivy League player in singles.

Scouting South Florida

South Florida enters Friday's match with a 4-6 overall record. The Bulls have defeated Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia State, Stetson, and SMU so far this year.

The Bulls are coming off a pair of losses in Murfreesboro, Tenn., last weekend when it fell to then-No. 21 Middle Tennessee State, 7-0, and Memphis, 6-1.

Alvin Tudorica is the Bulls' lone player ranked in the top 125 in the ITA rankings, coming in at No. 114.

Looking Ahead

Cornell will head to Hanover, N.H., next weekend for the ECAC Indoor Championships, which will be hosted by Dartmouth.
