STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Cornell took a trip to Happy Valley for a five-game slate at the Penn State Invitational. The weather caused some scheduling chaos, which altered the Big Red's order of competition. After all, Cornell was matched up with Penn State in the opener, which was moved to Thursday.
The Big Red rallied from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 4-3 win at Penn State on Thursday evening in game one of the Penn State Invitational. Cornell improved to 5-6 on the season, while the NIttany Lions fell to 16-4.
Penn State struck first when Lexie Black singled to first buying time for Melody Coombs to find home-plate, giving them a 1-0 lead after the opening-inning. Coombs would tack on another run at the bottom of the third, on a double from Black. Maggie Finnegan registered her first run of the day, from Lilia Crouthamel on an error to push their lead to 3-0.
Sydney Stapf gave the Big Red life, bringing them right back into the fold with a timely-triple that sent
Emma Antich,
Maicie Levitt, and
Marisa Zorrilla home, tying the game at 3-3 at the top of the fifth-inning. Levitt gave Cornell it's first lead of the day, scoring her second run after a wild pitch that advanced
Ella Harrod to third base. Antich came up major at the plate, smashing a triple which put the Big Red in ideal shape at the top of the seventh. Vanessa Oatley pitched a crucial out to send the Big Red out of the inning scoreless.
Maddie Covelli was tasked with making sure Cornell held on to it's one-run lead in the final stanza from Happy Valley. Covelli stood tall in the clutch with the bases loaded, completing the task of pitching Cornell to it's first victory against a power-five opponent since 2013, and snapping Penn State's nine-game winning-streak.
