Big Red Softball Defeats UMBC, 10-2

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Cornell was matched up with UMBC on day two of the Penn State Invitational. This would be the second meeting on the diamond between the two squads this season. The Big Red led the contest from start to finish, earning a 10-2 victory against the Retrievers in run-ahead rule fashion.

Sydney Stapf got the Big Red off to the races at the top of the first-inning with a homer to left center that sent Kate Callaway home. Hilcken joined in on the action, sending one beyond the left center fence, which batted Celia Macari in as well, putting Cornell in front 4-0 after the opening inning.

Ashley Della Guardia took a bite into the lead, putting the Retrievers on the board with a solo home run at the bottom of the third. Macari's single in the top of the third sent Stapf to the plate for her second run of the game.

With Hilcken and Macari parked on bases, Maicie Levitt hit a double to left center, sending them home to increase the lead to 7-1. Emma Antich scored a run in the next inning on a single from Hilcken that also advanced Macari and Stapf to second and third, respectively. UMBC matched the lone fourth-inning Cornell run with one of their own from Della Guardia (second of the day) on a hit (single) from Shanel Stott.

Levitt managed to put the game to rest on a center field single which ushered Hilcken and Stapf in for runs, giving Cornell a 10-2 victory at Beard Field. Mia Burd earned the win on the mound after facing 25 batters and allowing just four hits (two runs) in six innings pitched during the contest.
