Men’s Lacrosse Gets Back In Win Column With Big Ivy Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Cornell men's lacrosse dropped #8/#8 Yale, 20-10, in the Ivy League opener on Saturday, March 18. The 20 goals marks the most by the Big Red since the 2020 season, when the team tallied 21 vs. High Point. The Big Red improves to 5-1 (1-0 Ivy), while Yale falls to 3-2 (0-1 Ivy).

The Big Red attack was championed by Billy Coyle, who had eight points on two goals and six assists, breaking his single-game point record. CJ Kirst led the goal charge with five. Michael Long tallied a hat trick in his first appearance this season, while Aiden Blake added two goals and an assist. Ryan Sheehan scored two goals for a new single-game high.

Cornell held the Bulldogs to just two multi-goal scorers. Leo Johnson and Chris Lyons each notched hat tricks. Matt Brandau was the only other with more than one point. Brandau tallied one goal and one assist.

FIRST QUARTER
  • Yale's ride, which ranked number one in the country entering the game, created two looks in the first four minutes of the game that resulted in Bulldog goals.
  • Hugh Kelleher was first on the boards for the Big Red, finding the net at 10:25. His goal sparked an 8-0 Cornell run.
  • Michael Long secured his first goal of the season, going top shelf with 1:10 remaining.
  • Kirst did not etch his name on the score sheet until he beat the buzzer to close out the first.
SECOND QUARTER
  • Echoing the first, Yale Scored the first two goals of the quarter, both in the first 2:30 of play.
  • Long and Kirst finished their hat tricks in the second quarter, helping to boost the Big Red's lead to 12-4.
THIRD QUARTER
  • Spencer Wirtheim Marc Psyllos combined for a pair of seven second goals at 13:28 and 13:21.
  • Yale continued the trend with a goal five seconds later to bring the Cornell lead to 14-5.
  • JJ Lombardi found the goal for the first time since Ohio State with 8:16 left in the third.
  • Kirst added his fourth (second on a ball from Coyle), to bring the Big Red lead to 16-5 to close the third quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Yale outscored the Big Red 5-4 in the fourth quarter, including a goal with 11 seconds remaining.
  • Ryan Sheehan new half the fourth quarter goals for Cornell, helping power the Big Red to the 20-10 win.
Some Big Red Numbers
  • Chayse Ierlan made 20+ saves (21) for the second time this season. Before the game against Penn State, no Cornell goalie had notched 20+ saves since AJ Fiore in the 2010 season.
  • Ierlan now ranks 6th all-time at Cornell in career saves (492).
  • Gavin Adler scooped eight groundballs in the contest, tying his career-best that he tallied last season at Princeton.
  • Yale goalkeeper Jared Paquette entered the contest as one of the nation's top goaltenders with a .596 save percentage and an average of 16.25 saves per game this season. The Big Red held him to a career low .355 percentage, with 11 saves.
  • Angelo Petrakis had his best day at the faceoff this season, going 8-for-13.

Cornell returns to the field next week to host Pennsylvania. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m. in Sunday, March 26. For fans at home, the game will be televised on ESPNU.
