UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The No. 28-ranked Cornell men's tennis team cruised past No. 60-ranked Penn State, 6-1, at the Sarni Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
Cornell, who improved to 12-2 on the season, has now won four of its last five against Penn State, dating back to the 2016-17 campaign.
The Big Red's 12 wins in the team's first 14 matches is the best start to a season since also going 12-2 to start the 2016-17 season.
On Saturday, Cornell took the doubles point after winning the first two matches of the day. Sophomores
Adit Sinha and
Nathan Mao defeated Malik Bhatnagar and Charl Morgan, 6-2, before sophomore
Radu Papoe and senior Vlad Melnic edged Loren Byers and Sam Bossem, 7-5.
Papoe, who was ranked No. 81 in the most recent singles rankings by the ITA, did not concede a point in his 6-0, 6-0 victory over Morgan.
Penn State recorded its lone point of the match with a victory by Byers at the No. 3 position over freshman
Petar Teodorovic, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Melnic, Sinha, and Mao all recorded straight-set victories with the final set being won in tiebreaks.
Junior
Samuel Paquette won the final match of the day at the No. 6 position, defeating Bhatnagar in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.
Looking Ahead
Cornell will open a modest two-match homestand with a match against No. 36-ranked VCU on Sunday, March 26 at the Reis Tennis Center. Doubles action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
