ITHACA, N.Y. — The No. 34-ranked VCU men's tennis team posted a 4-2 victory over No. 30-ranked Cornell at the Reis Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
VCU, who improved to 13-4 on the season, claimed the first point of the day with a pair of 6-4 victories in the top two doubles matches.
Sophomores
Radu Papoe and
Nathan Mao registered straight-set victories for the Big Red (12-3). Papoe, who is ranked No. 95 in the most recent ITA singles rankings, defeated No. 93-ranked Matisse Bobichon, 6-4, 6-1. Mao conceded just four points, all of which came in the second set, 6-0, 6-4.
The Bertimon brothers posted straight-set victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots, and Romain Gales edged junior
Samuel Paquette, 6-4, 7-5, to guide the Rams to the victory.
Fellow sophomore
Adit Sinha and Rayane Stable each won sets by 6-2 scores, but their match was halted in the third set with Sinha winning, 2-1, after the match was already decided.
Looking Ahead
Cornell will return to the Reis Tennis Center on Saturday, April 1 for a 1 p.m. match with Western Michigan. The match with Broncos will be a tune-up for the Big Red's Ivy League opener at No. 61-ranked Penn on Friday, April 7.
