ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell lacrosse team scored six of seven goals at one span over the fourth quarter to rally for a 16-13 victory over UConn on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red improved to 6-2 on the season, while the Huskies slipped to 4-3.
Josie Vogel scored four goals and assisted on a fifth to lead a balanced Big Red offensive attack.
Katie Castiello scored four times,
Caitlin Slaminko had three and
Amanda Cramer notched two goals and two assists. Kyle Gelabert was the fifth player with a multi-point game, registering a goal and two assists.
Shannon Brazier caused three turnovers, won three ground balls and two draws from her midfield position, while
Caitlin Tully and
Alexis Reinhardt also forced two UConn miscues.
Annie Thomas was credited with eight draw wins, pushing her career total to 156 - just three shy of Sarah Hefner's 159 from 2012-15.
As a team, Cornell held a 35-29 edge in shots and took advantage of 18 Husky turnovers. UConn held an 18-15 edge in draws, but the Big Red narrowed that significantly in the fourth with a 6-3 advantage.
Ellie Horner stopped four shots in goal to pick up her sixth victory.
UConn's Grace Coon had four goals and Lia Laprise notched three goals and two assists to pace the offense. Kate Shaffer notched a goal, three assists and five draws, while Sophia Sorneson posted a hat trick in the loss. Landyn White had nine saves between the pipes for the visitors who entered the week receiving votes in the IWLCA poll.
The Big Red led 5-1 late in the first quarter, saw UConn tie it at 6-6 and then pulled ahead 8-6 at the break. UConn's Coon scored four times in the span of 3:44, with Shaffer assisting on three of them, as the visitors made their run. Cornell, meanwhile, had seven different goal scorers in taking the 8-6 edge.
After tying the score five times over the first three quarters, UConn grabbed its first lead of the day at 11-10 with 1:39 left in the third and went into the final 15 minutes with a one-goal advantage. Then Cornell regained the momentum.
Caitlin Slaminko evened the score for the sixth time 1:01 into the fourth, followed by a Castiello goal less than two minutes later to regain the edge. The seventh and final tie came with six minutes to play when Sorenson scored on a free position shot. The final five minutes were colored in red.
Vogel put Cornell back in front to trigger a 4-0 run over 4:06, scoring the first and last goals of the run.
Kylie Gelabert assisted on two, while Cramer had a goal and an assist in putting the game away. UConn put one in the back of the net with 11 seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late.
