ITHACA, N.Y. — Coming off her Ramsay Cup championship last season, senior
Sivasangari Subramaniam is looking to repeat as a national champion.
Subramaniam is the top seed at this year's College Squash Association Individual National Championships, which will be held this weekend at the Arlen Specter U.S. Squash Center in Philadelphia.
Joining Subramaniam will be
Wen Li Lai, who is the No. 12 seed in the Ramsay Cup, and freshmen
Alysa Ali and
Aishwarya Khubchandani.
Subramaniam registered an 11-1 record at the top position this year for the Big Red. The lone setback on the season came to Columbia's Farida Mohamed on Feb. 18, which snapped the Cornellian senior's 28-match win streak.
The road to a second consecutive national championship begins at 11:15 a.m. on Friday when Subramaniam faces No. 16-seeded Nouran Youssef of Trinity.
Lai split time between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions this season, posting a team-high 13 wins on the year. She will be facing the Drexel's Alina Bushma, who is the No. 5 seed in the bracket.
Last year, Lai was the No. 7 seed in the Ramsay Cup and fell to No. 2-seeded Hana Moataz in three games. Moataz later on played Subramaniam in the championship match.
Ali and Khuvchandani will be making their first appearances at the National Individual Championships this weekend.
After recording a 12-5 record in her first collegiate season, Ali will be the No. 7 seed in the Holleran South bracket where she will play Williams' Haley Jefferson, who is the No. 10 seed.
Khubchandani also had a strong freshman campaign, recording an 11-5 record. She will be the No. 2 seed in the Holleran West bracket and will play No. 15-seeded Avika Pande of Wesleyan.
Matches throughout the weekend can be viewed live on YouTube and live scoring will be provided by the College Squash Association.
