MLAX Makes It 4-0 With First Top-10 Win of the Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Cornell men's lacrosse earned its fourth consecutive win, and its first over a top-10 ranked opponent this year with a 16-13 victory over #9/#8 Ohio State. The win pushed Cornell to 4-0 (0-0) and Ohio State fell to 3-2 (0-0).

The Big Red was led by Billy Coyle, who tallied six points with four goals and two assists. CJ had five with four goals and an assist. Brian Piatelli earned his first career hat trick. Hugh Kelleher, Spencer Wirtheim, and JJ Lombardi were the other multi-point scorers for Cornell.

The Buckeyes were led by Ed Shean, who tallied four goals. Jack Myers added three assists for Ohio State, while Scott White match the three-point performance with two goals and an assist. Dillon Magee, Matt Caputo, and Blake Eiland each added two for OSU.

The Big Red, which has put up big second half numbers so far this season, won the day with its first half numbers. Kirst was the first to get on the scoring sheet with just over three minutes in. Ohio State answered on a man-up opportunity less than two minutes later, but a 3-1 Cornell run would end the first quarter, 4-2. Jack Cascadden tallied his first career goal to open the second, sparking a 5-1 Big Red run in the second quarter.

  • CJ Kirst tallied his fourth hat trick in as many games.
  • Cascadden's goal is the first by a freshman this season.
  • The Big Red scored more goals than their season average for the second time (13.67).

The Big Red returns to action Saturday, March 11, to take on former Cornell head coach, Jeff Tambroni, and his Penn State Nittany Lions. The action will go down at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, N.Y. with faceoff set for 12 p.m. Fans at home can catch the action on ESPN+.
