ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell men's tennis team defeated Western Michigan, 5-2, at the Reis Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon in a final tune-up for Ivy League play that begins next weekend.
Cornell (13-3) used victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in doubles to take the opening point of the match. Sophomore
Radu Papoe and freshman
Aman Sharma claimed a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles, and sophomore
Jack McCarthy and freshman
Petar Teodorovic won, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles.
Sophomore
Adit Sinha and Sharma were the lone two Big Red players to record straight-set victories. Sinha defeated Peter Kuszynski, 6-4, 6-3, and Sharma conceded just five points to Brogan Pierce, 6-1, 6-4.
Papoe and Teodorovic each won three-set matches for Cornell after winning the opening set of their respective matches.
After winning 6-4 in the opening set, Papoe was edged by Anton Arzhankin, 6-3, to force a decisive third set. Papoe cruised in the final set, 6-0.
Teodorovic was also strong in the third set of his match, dropping just one point to Arjun Honnappa, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.
Sophomore
Nathan Mao and McCarthy fell in their respective matches at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
Looking Ahead
Cornell will open Ivy League play next weekend when it plays No. 60-ranked Penn on Friday, April 7, at 1 p.m. before returning to the Reis Tennis Center for a 1 p.m. match against No. 49-ranked Princeton on Sunday, April 9.
