ITHACA, N.Y. — The No. 30-ranked Cornell men's tennis team fell in its Ivy League opener to No. 53-ranked Penn, 4-3, at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
With the victory, Penn (10-7, 2-0 Ivy) increased its win streak to five games and has won its last 22 home matches.
Cornell (13-4, 0-1 Ivy) fell in its Ivy League opener for the first time since the 2017-18 season when it also dropped a 4-3 decision to Princeton on April 6, 2018.
Penn opened the contest with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the match's point.
Radu Papoe, who is ranked No. 80 in the most recent update to the ITA singles rankings on Tuesday, increased his win streak to six matches with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Edoardo Graziani.
Nathan Mao (No. 5) and
Aman Sharma (No. 6) each logged straight-set victories for the Big Red in the setback.
Kevin Zhu (No. 2) and Aditya Gupta (No. 3) had straight-set victories for the Quakers, and Harsh Parikh had a three-set victory over sophomore
Adit Sinha, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9), to extend the Quakers' home win streak.
Looking Ahead
No. 30-ranked Cornell will return to action on Sunday when it hosts No. 50-ranked Princeton in its first Ivy League home match of the season. Doubles action will begin at 1 p.m. from the Reis Tennis Center.
