Men’s Lacrosse Posts Double-Digit Victory for the Third Time This Season

ITHACA, N.Y. -- After Marquette struck first, the Big Red struck often. A 10-goal first half run resulted in the Cornell men's lacrosse team's 21-11 victory over the Golden Eagles on Tuesday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field in the first-ever meeting between the programs. Cornell improved to 8-2 on the season, while Marquette slipped to 6-5.

Twelve different Cornell players scored a goal, including a six-goal, eight-point effort from CJ Kirst. He led eight Big Red players with multiple points in a balanced win. Cornell assisted on 12 of its goals, with four helpers part of a six-point day for Billy Coyle. Michael Long was also credited with two goals and two assists.

Defensively, both Walker Wallace and Gavin Adler had three caused turnovers and combined for nine ground ball wins, with Chayse Ierlan posting 12 saves in goal. The Big Red won the ground ball battle 37-35, were perfect in the clear game (25-of-25) and caused 11 turnovers.

Marquette had a narrow edge in faceoffs (19-17), though Cornell won 6-of-9 in the decisive first quarter. Luke Williams won 10 faceoffs with a team-best six ground balls. Bobby O'Grady had a team-high three goals, with Jake Stegman credited with three assists. In goal, Michael Allieri went the distance, making 10 saves.

QUARTER 1
  • Marquette was first on the boards with a goal by Devon Cowan at the 12:26 mark.
  • Cornell had the quick response with a goal by Ryan Sheehan on a pass from Billy Coyle, sparking a 7-0 run to close out the first quarter.
  • With 2:30 remaining in the first, Kirst had already tallied a hat trick.
QUARTER 2
  • Cornell built the lead out to 10-1 with 12:56 left in the second quarter, including a pole goal from Brendan Staub.
  • The Big Red and Golden Eagles traded goals the rest of the half, ending at 14-5.
QUARTER 3
  • Marquette found the first goal of the second half, just 48 seconds into the third quarter.
  • Long had the answer with his second goal of the day at 9:53, and Kirst completed the sock trick at 8:29.
  • Marquette closed the third on a 2-0 run, to trail 16-8.
QUARTER 4
  • The Big Red outscored Marquette 5-3 in the final quarter.
  • Ben Abladian scored his first and second goal in a Big Red uniform at 6:11 and 2:40.

  • The 10-goal win marks the second win by as many goals immediately following a Cornell loss this season.
  • Kirst has scored at least six goals in four of Cornell's 10 games.
  • Kirst has 49 goals so far this season, tied for eighth all-time in single season goals at Cornell.
  • Jack Cascadden scored his third-career goal.
  • Brian Luzzi notched his second-career goal.
  • Brian Piatelli has expanded his point streak to four games.
