LAUSANNE, Switzerland --Â
Eileen Bringman, assistant coach for the Cornell Women's Swim and Dive team, has joined Team USA as an assistant coach for the 2023 FISU World University Games, set to be played in Chengdu, China. Bringman brings over a decade of coaching experience to Team USA as the team gets ready to represent the red, white, and blue on the world stage.
The FISU World University Games are an international competition among university students, hosted in a different country every two years. The most recent running of the World University Games was in 2019 in Napoli, Italy, and it saw over 6,000 athletes compete across 18 sports for fame and glory. After taking a four-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, the stage is set for possibly the largest running of the competition to date as Chengdu, China prepares to welcome thousands of the world's top athletes. The Games will take place from July28 through August 8, 2023.
As announced in January, USA Swimming will not be sending a team to the World University Games, instead opting to compete swimmers individually. Bringman will be the assistant coach to 50 of the country's fastest swimmers, working alongside head coaches Peter Richardson from USC and MAAC Women's Coach of the Year, Jacy Dyer from Fairfield. Joining Bringman in the assistant coach position is Carl Weigley (UC Davis), Guy Buls (Henderson State), Brian Loeffler (Loyola) and Sean Sullivan (Illinois State) as announced by Deputy Head of delegation for USA World University Games, Neal Holden.
The Team USA delegation is capped at 50 total swimmers, with 25 spots reserved for both the men's and women's team, according to the Team USA press release. Bringman, working with the six other coaches, will be tasked with creating a roster of the nation's strongest and fastest swimmers.
Bringman brings years of coaching experience to Team USA. In only second year as assistant coach at Cornell, she has overseen eight school records get broken and 39 top-10 times in Big Red history this year alone. Prior to Cornell, Bringman was head coach for both the Lake Shore Swim Club and Fairview High School in Cleveland, Ohio for a combined 15 years. In that time, Bringman was named Lake Erie Swimming Senior Coach of the Year once and Team Ohio Mid-State All-Star Coach three consecutive times.
