Early Lead, Late Goals Lift Women's Lax Past #19 Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Kylie Gelabert's goal with just under two minutes remaining snapped a tie and the Cornell women's lacrosse team moved into a tie for third place in the Ancient Eight standings with a 14-12 win at No. 19 Yale on Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. The win allowed the Big Red to even its record overall and in Ivy play (7-7, 3-3 Ivy), while the Bulldogs slipped to 9-5 (3-3 Ivy).

Gelabert's goal, her first of the day, allowed Cornell to hang on after Yale knotted the game at 8-8 and 12-12 after the visitors jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. After the go-ahead score with 1:55 to play, Cornell won the draw and killed off nearly 90 seconds before Shannon Brazier put up an insurance goal to clinch the win.

Amanda Cramer had three goals and an assist to lead the Big Red offense, while both Caitlin Slaminko (three goals) and Maggie Pons (two goals, one assist) also had three-point afternoons. In all, eight different Big Red players recorded a goal. Annie Thomas won five draw controls, Slaminko added four draws to her hat trick, while Cramer had three draw wins. As a team, the Big Red held a slim 16-15 lead at the draw circle. Grace Faircloth had a pair of caused turnovers in front of Ellie Horner, who made nine saves in picking up the win.

Sky Carrasquillo led Yale with five goals and an assist with Fallon Vaughn adding three goals and two assists. Jenna Collignon posted three goals, an assists and seven draw controls.

The win sets up a win-and-in scenario for the Big Red's Ivy Tournament hopes. A victory in next weekend's Senior Day contest against Brown would put Cornell in the Ivy Tournament for the 10th time in 12 events, and depending on results of other games, could lift the Big Red as high as the No. 3 seed. The Big Red would only qualify with a loss under one one scenario - that includes last-place Columbia defeating Yale, Penn wrapping up an unbeaten Ivy season against Dartmouth and Harvard knocking off Princeton.

The Big Red set the tone early, never trailed and snapped a two-game skid against the Bulldogs. Cornell led 3-0 midway through the first, 6-1 early in the second and 7-4 at the break before Yale rallied. The Bulldogs used separate runs of 4-0 and 3-0, the second of which tied the game with 2:59 left in regulation, setting up Cornell's winning finish on Gelabert's score off a Katie Castiello feed.
