ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell and Yale took the diamond for day two of action in an Ivy-League series from Niemand-Robison Field. The Bulldogs took game one of the doubleheader in a barn-burner, 16-12. The Big Red bounced back in the second game of the day, earning its first victory of the series 8-6.
Game One:
The Big Red and the Bulldogs opened the game with a scoreless inning, which would prove to be an atypical stanza in this contest. Cornell and Yale combined for 26 runs, with multiple scores coming in every inning except for the first. A four-run second inning got Yale off to a commanding 4-0 start to the game.
Ella Harrod and
Marisa Zorrilla responded with runs at the bottom, trimming the Bulldog lead to 4-2. Yale exploded for nine straight tallies to boost themselves to a 13-2 advantage in the top of the fourth. Harrod lapped the bases for the second time of the evening, taking the count to 13-3.
Threatening a run-ahead rule win, SJ Mull and Maddie Latta tacked on two more at the top of the fifth, which sent the Big Red to the plate under pressure to keep the game alive. Cornell exploded for six runs, which pushed the score to 16-9 as they successfully avoided a mercy-rule decision.
Julie Hilcken,
Sydney Stapf, and
Emma Antich would give the Big Red hope in a possible rally, but it proved to not be enough as the Bulldogs escaped with a 16-12 victory in the first of game of the day.
Game Two:
Cornell took the diamond with hopes of avoiding a sweep and adding another Ivy-League victory to its record.
Maicie Levitt opened up the scoring column in the first-inning with a homer to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs scored six unanswered runs, putting them ahead 6-1, which looked eerily similar to the sequence in the previous matchup. Cornell blasted three fifth-inning home runs (
Celia Macari, Antich, and
Lauren Holt) beyond the fences which helped them regain the lead, 8-6.
Gabrielle Maday took over the mound for
Mia Burd, as she pitched the Big Red to victory.
