ITHACA, N.Y. — The No. 30-ranked Cornell men's tennis team defeated No. 52-ranked Princeton, 5-2, at the Reis Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
Cornell improved its record to 14-4 on the season, while opening the first weekend of its Ivy League schedule with a 1-1 mark. Princeton is now 12-12 on the year and remains winless in Ivy League play (0-3).
Victories by the tandems of sophomores
Adit Sinha and
Nathan Mao, 6-3, and by sophomore
Radu Papoe and senior
Vladislav Melnic, 6-3, guided the Big Red to the match's opening point.
Papoe, who is ranked No. 80 in the ITA singles rankings, extended his win streak to seven matches with his 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-3 victory over Fnu Nidunjianzan.
Petar Teodorovic avenged dropping the opening set to Will Peters, 6-2, with 6-2 and 6-3 set victories to win in three sets at No. 3 singles.
Mao and fellow sophomore
Aman Sharma each won in straight sets to solidify the victory for the Big Red.
The victory for Mao did not come easy as he and Ellis Short had to play a pair of tiebreak matches. Mao won the the first-set tiebreak 9-7 before posting a 7-5 tiebreak victory in the second set.
Sharma dropped just five points in the pair of sets, 6-4, 6-1, to Matthew Bosancic.
Sinha lost his match after retiring from his match at No. 4 singles, and Melnic was defeated by Thomas Bosancic by a pair of 6-4 victories at No. 2 singles.
Looking Ahead
Cornell will return to Ivy League action next weekend when it heads to Harvard on Saturday and Dartmouth on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., and will be streamed live on Stretch Internet.
