ITHACA, N.Y. -- Maxie Baughan, a College Football Hall of Famer who guided the Big Red to the 1988 Ivy League title as head coach, passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2023. He was 85.

Baughan guided the Big Red football program to a 28-29-2 mark overall (23-18-1 Ivy League) in six seasons, though that record was 20-9-1 over his final three years (16-5 Ivy) on the sidelines. Included in that span was a share of the 1988 Ivy League title, one of just three won by the Big Red since the formation of the conference, as well as a second-place finish in 1986.

A member of the Philadelphia Eagles and College Football Halls of Fame, Baughan was named one of 12 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023 after being a semifinalist in 2022. He was also inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (1980), the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame (1983) and the Gator Bowl Hall of Fame. A nine-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro selection as a linebacker, he later coached for a dozen years in the NFL in addition to college stints at Cornell and Georgia Tech.

Baughan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dianne as well as their three children – Max (wife Jenn), Mark (wife Carolyn) and Matt (wife Kelly); and eight grandchildren. Matt Baughan serves as the Cornell golf coach, the manager of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course and the head pro.

Cornell athletics sends its deepest condolences to Matt and the entire Baughan family.

Information regarding services will be announced at a later date.
