Koszyk, Putnam Close Out 2023 World Rowing Championships With First-Place Finishes

BELGRADE, Serbia — Cornell heavyweight rowing alumni Eliot Putnam '18, and lightweight rowing alumni Sorin Koszyk '20, each recorded first-place finishes in their respective events in the final day of the 2023 World Rowing Championships on Sunday morning at the Ada Ciganlija regatta course on Sava Lake.

Koszyk and his crewmate, Ben Davison, went wire-to-wire in the 'C' final of the men's double sculls, leaping out to a six-second lead after the opening 1000 meters and up to an eight-second lead after the 1500-meter mark. The American tandem concluded the race with a time of 6:12.55, finishing 7.82 seconds ahead of Serbian duo Aleksandar Bedik and Aleksandar Filipovic, who placed second with a time of 6:20.37. With the first-place finish, Koszyk and Davison finished 13th overall in the event.

Putnam, who was racing in the 'D' finals of the men's single sculls, finished more than a length ahead of Uruguay's Bruno Cetraro Berriolo to place 19th in the event. Spain's Gonzalo Garcia Ferrero took the lead after the first 500 meters, but Putnam was able to jump from third to first place at the race's halfway point. The American was able to hold onto first place for the remaining 1000 meters, clocking a time of 6:53.53, finishing 3.70 seconds ahead of Cetraro Berriolo.
