Late Goal In Regulation, 2OT Score Gives Field Hockey 2-1 Win Over American

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Caroline Ramsey's sixth goal of the season capped a late comeback and gave the Cornell field hockey team its first-ever win over American, topping the Eagles 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. The Big Red improved to 3-2, while American fell to 3-4.

It seemed like just a matter of time before the Big Red cashed in on a penalty corner, and they did just that at the right moment. On Cornell's 12th opportunity of the day, Ramsey slammed home a drag flick on a feed from sister Julia and a clean stop from Rease Coleman. That came on the heels of Grace Leahy's third score of the weekend, this one  tying the contest with 2:16 remaining in regulation.

Cornell goalkeeper Martha Broderick made seven saves and kept the Eagles off the scoreboard on nine chances on the penalty corner, again holding its opponent scoreless in the second half of a contest. That streak now sits at 148:40 of scoreless second half play.

The Big Red held a 17-14 edge in shots and a 12-9 edge in penalty corners and may not have had to play extra time if it weren't for American goalkeeper Bryn Underwood, who stood strong with 11 saves, including six big stops in the first quarter to set the tone.

Cornell was chasing the visitors nearly the entire second half after Emilia Winkler's popped in a shot over Broderick's shoulder with 2:20 remaining before halftime after a scrum in front of the cage to make it 1-0.

With significant offensive pressure, Cornell finally equalized when Ashley Plzak served the ball into the circle from the right corner to the stick of Antonia Packard, who quickly shot but Underwood made a diving save. Leahy was right there to pick it up and push it over the line.

Ramsey's sixth goal of the year was also her 37th career score (No. 4) and her 81st point (No. 8), along with her eighth game winner (No. 6), all top 10 ranks in school history.
