Big Red Rolls To 2-0 Ivy League Play After Explosive 6-1 Win Over Dartmouth

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior All-American Caroline Ramsey scored three goals and assisted on two others as the Cornell field hockey team moved to 2-0 in Ivy League play for the third consecutive season thanks to a 6-1 win over Dartmouth on Friday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. The win helped the Big Red improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Big Green slipped to 2-3 (0-2 Ivy).

Ramsey's eight points are tied for the third-most in a game in school history, one off the record of nine, with her three goals matching a career best and placing her sixth at Cornell. She moved up to sixth in career points (89) and second in goals (40), while her ninth career game-winning goal moved her into fourth in school history.

While Caroline Ramsey's explosive performance headlined the day, she was far from alone. Senior Claire Wolfe had three assists, while freshman Julia Ramsey, the nation's leader in assists entering the day, also notched three helpers. Polly Parsons, Grace Leahy and Olivia Friedberg also scored goals as the Big Red offense combined for 21 points on the day, No. 6 at Cornell in a single game. The Big Red's nine assists stand tied for second.

Defensively, Martha Broderick had three saves, with Caroline Ramsey also making a defensive save in the back on a penalty corner. Cornell held a 22-7 edge in shots and a 10-6 advantage on penalty corners.

"I think we played very well at times," said head coach Andy Smith. "We got six very, very good goals and a bit of a statement win for us tonight. I'm really proud of the way we played. We created a lot of opportunities and we're taking care of them. We've got some thing we need to fix but overall I'm very happy with where we are."

Lucia Campano notched Dartmouth's lone goal, the first score allowed by the Big Red defense in the second half of a game since the season opener at Syracuse. That momentarily paused Cornell's momentum after Ramsey had scored twice in a span of 31 seconds on penalty corners.

After a scoreless first period that saw the Big Red held a 6-1 edge in shots, Cornell broke through four minutes into the second when Ramsey rammed home the team's second penalty corner attempt of the night on a feed from her sister Julia and a hold by Wolfe. That edge grew to 2-0 with just over 90 seconds left in the half when Parsons netted her second score of her career, knocking one in after a Ramsey corner attempt got the defense scrambling.

Less than four minutes in, Ramsey scored her eighth goal of the year after Elizabeth Friedberg inserted and Wolfe stopped. She shelved a shot in the top of the net to make it 3-0. Less than a minute, nearly the identical shot by Ramsey made it 4-0, the only difference coming from Julia Ramsey's insertion.

After Dartmouth got a goal back, reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Grace Leahy scored for the third straight contest on a helper from Caroline Ramsey, with Olivia Friedberg capping the scoring with a brilliant move into the circle and a shot that beat the Dartmouth goalkeeper with just under seventh minutes to play to make it 6-1.
