HANOVER, N.H. — Hailey Rorick's goal in the 82nd minute lifted Dartmouth to a 1-0 victory over Cornell at Burnham Field on a picturesque Saturday afternoon.
Hanah Curtin and Daisy Granholm recorded the assists for the Big Green (7-0-3, 2-0-0 Ivy), who also had a one-save clean sheet by senior goalkeeper Emily Hardy.
Junior goalkeeper
Erica Fox stopped four shots in the setback for the Big Red (3-2-4, 0-2-0 Ivy).
Reagan Pauwels recorded Cornell's lone shot on goal in the 59th minute.
"It'll be a long bus ride back," Cornell women's soccer head coach Rob Ferguson said. "I don't think we did enough to win the game necessarily, but I don't think we deserved to lose. This is how the game can go, and we need to focus on the next game quickly."
Both teams' offenses were held at bay over the opening 45 minutes as Cornell held a 2-1 advantage in shot attempts over the first half. Curtin had the lone shot on goal in the opening frame, having her shot saved by Fox in the 39th minute.
In the second half, both team's offenses kicked into another gear, combining for 13 shot attempts. Dartmouth held the slight advantage, 7-6, while posting a 4-1 ledger in shots on goal over the final 45 minutes.
"We matched Dartmouth in shots and creating opportunities but didn't make one stick," Ferguson said. "The game was back-and-forth in terms of momentum, and we felt that we needed to take better care of the ball in some pretty rudimentary moments. Had we done so, the outcome could have been different, which is frustrating."
Cornell had plenty of opportunities to score in the second half as the Big Red recorded six corner kicks — four of which came in just over two minutes.
Three of Fox's four saves came in the second period as she halted shot attempts by Carly Retterer (58th minute), Rorick (68th minute), and Valverde (75th minute).
Dartmouth's game-winning goal came on a feed from Curtin inside the penalty box, setting up Rorick to one-time her shot past Fox, who made a valiant attempt to make a diving save to her left to preserve the shutout.
