ITHACA, N.Y. – After a weekend away at the Bucknell Invitational, Cornell volleyball opens its home schedule Wednesday against Central New York foe Syracuse.

A Strong Showing at the Bucknell Invitational

Cornell opened its 2023 season last weekend at the Bucknell Invitational, going 1-2. The Big Red defeated Niagara 3-1 on Friday before losing two tough matches on Saturday to William & Mary (2-3) and the host Bison (0-3).

Junior Camryn Carlo was named to the all-tournament team for the Big Red, registering 25 kills and 12 blocks to go along with a team-high .350 attack percentage on the weekend. Sophomore Eliza Konvicka picked up where she left off in 2022, netting a team-high 47 kills over the three matches, including a career-high 25 against the Purple Eagles.

Sophomore Doga Ozalp also had a strong showing for the Big Red, netting a career-high 48 assists in the win over Niagara on Friday and freshman libero Sarita Pomar starred in her debut for Cornel, playing in all 12 sets, recording 55 digs.

Looking To Break the Streak 

Wednesday's match will be the 45th all-time matchup between the Big Red and Orange. Cornell comes into Wednesday's matchup looking to snap a six-match winless streak versus Syracuse as their last win came in straight sets on October 24, 2006 in Newman Arena.'

Inside the Opponent

 • Syracuse went 11-17 in 2022, including a 7-11 record in ACC play. The Orange finished 11th in the final ACC standings.
 • Syracuse comes into Newman Arena with a 0-6 record. The Orange have struggled to gain momentum early on in 2023, dropping all eighteen of its completed sets, including five by three points or less.
 • Junior OH/RH Cherlin Antonio leads the way for the Orange with 29 kills in 2023, while graduate student Lauren McCabe is second with 24.
 • Freshman Zharia Harris-Waddy leads the Orange in hitting percentage (.255) and is tied for the team lead with Antonio in points (31.0).
 • The Orange comes into Wednesday match last in the ACC in hitting percentage (.081) and opponent hitting percentage (.326).

Ivy League Preseason Poll
Cornell was chosen to finish sixth in the 2023 Ivy League preseason poll. Yale topped the list with 125 points and 13 first-place votes with Princeton coming in second with 111 points and the remaining three first-place votes. Brown (97), Dartmouth (76) and Harvard (65) rounded out the top five. The Big Red's 42 points placed it ahead of Columbia (38) and Penn (22). The Big Red has finished in the top three of the final standings in three of the past four seasons.

Up Next

After Wednesday's match, the Big Red will head up I-13 for the Colgate Invitational in Hamilton, N.Y. They will play West Virginia on Friday, Sept 8 at 3:00 p.m. before matching up against the University at Albany (11:00 a.m.) and Colgate (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 9. All three matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
