Week in Review
The Big Red had a mid-week match up against Syracuse on Wednesday night from Newman Arena at Bartels Hall, losing 3-1. Sophomore Eliza Konvicka netted a team-high nine kills and one block for the Big Red, while Nicole Mallus had eight kills and six digs. Sophomore Doga Ozalp also put in a good showing with 15 assists and 12 digs) and Joy Liu recorded a career-high 12 assists in the defeat for Cornell.
A Look Inside the Matchups
vs. West Virginia:
• Friday's match will be the first meeting between the Big Red and Mountaineers.
• West Virginia went 7-22 overall and 0-16 in Big 12 action in 2022.
• The Mountaineers come into Friday's matchup sporting a 2-4 record. They have lost three straight matches since since starting 2-1 to open the season at the College of Charleston Tournament
• Junior Hailey Green has been the star for the Mountaineers in 2023, racking up a team-leading 77 kills to go along with 11.0 blocks. Redshirt senior Lauren DeLo has been the main setter for West Virginia, recording 9.95 assists per set, good for fifth over in the Big 12.
• The Mountaineers rank in the top five in the Big 12 in opponent digs (12.55/set) and opponent blocks (1.86/set).
vs. UAlbany:
• Saturday's 11 a.m. matchup will be the Big Red and Great Danes will be the 11th all-time meeting.
• Cornell has lost consecutive matches to Albany. Its last win came in four sets at the Syracuse Tournament on Sept. 21, 2014.
• UAlbany went 7-20 overall and 2-8 in American East play in 2022.
• The Great Danes come into the tournament 1-5 overall and are currently riding a five match losing streak after sweeping Syracuse in straight sets on Aug. 25.
• Redshirt Sophomore Shynelle Woroniuk leads UAlbany with 2.67 kills/set, while sophomore MB Tori Wilson leads the team in blocks with 10.0.
• The Great Danes rank last in the American East in hitting percentage (.156) but are first in opponent blocks with 1.37 given up per set.
at Colgate:
• Saturday's 7:30 p.m. matchup between the Big Red and Raiders will be the 89th all-time meeting.
• Cornell is 2-3 in its last five matches against Colgate. Its last win came in straight sets at the Desmond Hotel Volleyball Classic in Albany, N.Y. on Sept. 4, 2021.
• The Raiders went 24-6 overall and 14-2 in Patriot League play in 2022, winning the regular season and conference championship. Colgate matched up against No. 6 Pittsburgh in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, losing in straight sets.
• Colgate comes into the weekend with a 2-4 record and are currently on a four-match losing streak
• Sophomore Carlie Rzeszotarski leads the Raiders in 2023 with 77 kills and 44 digs in 22 sets. Five Raiders also have double-digit blocks on the season, including fifth year student Sophie Thompson, who leads with 34.0.
